I honestly wouldn't care if they charged something for it. If they can continue to receive revenue for an older instrument, they'll have renewed incentive to continue developing for it.

There's little reason for a company to update stuff if they're not getting anything in return for that update.

+1

let's keep our fingers crossed for Berlin Piano will also be free!

From the Korg UK Facebook page:

"the Berlin piano will be available to original KRONOS owners for a fee."

Fair enough I reckon.

Question is though - will it require a new SSD if you only have the original 30GB SSD?

How is that fair enough..? lol

Even the bigger m3 expanded version was free to all m3 users, with a new piano and full library of new sounds.

For the kronos they should do exactly the same thing, offer the new piano and a decent new soundbank to substitute (or complement) the lackustre 10year old one on the kronos.

Because it's a new version of an engine which we haven't actually paid for.

It's a bit like getting a bunch of paid-for presets, but better.

Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth!

Nobody should ever buy a board for anything it doesn't do on the day they buy it. Any future enhancements are a welcome bonus. Even paid ones. The fact that the OS upgrade itself will be free is even better. I don't think companies owe people free upgrades except bug fixes.

I will be very happy if they continue to support my original Kronos. To often things just become obsolete right about the time we've finished paying them off.

Again they have confirmed that the OS 3 will be an upgrade for original Kronos owners.

The two new soundsets will likely be a paid upgrade (and that is understandable).

spending $150 on a new soundset sure beats buying another $3k-$4k keyboard ( and selling a 2 or 3 yr old board)

It appears that the Kronos is practically future proof, for another couple of years.

From what I understand, the Berlin D will be available to 1 and X, but the EXs18 and its 21 Gb of samples will not be available for v1 and X.

Also, EXs18 is a "Best Of" from Karo/KApro with strings and brass.

the EXs 18 Collections looks like a taste of the optional Korg-developed Strings, Choirs & Funk Horns. Surely that will be free.

Here's a direct link to the new voice name list:
http://www.korg.com/download/global/kronos2/KRONOS_VNL_EFGSJ3.pdf

Looks like they added new banks of EXi and HD1 programs at internal banks A & B. All the other banks remain starting at bank C, skipping user bank G and added user banks AA & BB.
Internal Banks A & B have a lot of programs listed by song names. The beginning of bank A has the new Berlin piano presets. The beginning of bank B also has 15 presets from EXs 18.

it's 21Gb TOTAL: 12Gb from orig Kronos and 9gb from Berlin piano. EXs18 is just a smidgen, only a handful of detailed multisamples.

Finally, Korg gets it now by naming voices by song names. Makes total sense when trying to figure out what a sound is by it's name. Even it you don't play that song, you can extrapolate into another sound by using it as a foundation. Love it!

Yes, I think you're right xp50player. Reading the blurb again, EXs18 is probably around 500 Mb.

Still, I'm told it sounds great. We'll see.

Hello,

The previous VNL file name in OS 2.1.2 is EFGSJ2.
The new VNL is EFGSJ3.
I have minimum hope that current Kronos is upgradable to version 3..

Also I see some EXs11 and full EXs12 multisamples in the VNL3.
It seems like KORG try to commercial EXs libraries for coming New KRONOS user.
Because the list says "* When the instrument is shipped from the factory, the 16 types of EXs12 SGX‐1 Austrian D Piano do not sound. The optional EXs12 download is required."
If they are free, EXs11 & 12 user would cry.. Crying or Very sad

It appears to be vent holes on the top upper back; would there possibly be no fan any longer? (hmm . . .) Hey, if my drive (30gb- won't upgrade) is too full for the new piano, can I store on an external drive for use like I would to recall if I had a second drive on onboard? I might be stuck not having the new Berlin D. It sounds pretty good to me!
