Voice Stealing
On average, how many parts are you using before you start running into voice stealing issues? Just curious what other people are seeing based on individual useage.
I've had wildly different results depending on what filters i'm using, that's been the real eye-opener for me. One track had the MS-20 filter on every part (because i do like the way it sounds) and the part count was pathetic, maybe 4-5 parts (with the audio in part counted in that 4-5) before things started dropping out. Another track i just used the Electribe filter, which sounds perfectly acceptable and useable to me, and i was getting 4 parts (drums) plus another 4-5 synth/pcm parts and nothing untoward was happening. Bearing in mind my tracks are never very "busy" i was well pleased.
If I'm not listening to music, or if I'm not making music, then I'm probably thinking about music.

I did fairly scientific testing and could get 11 voices, when the first 10 were drums.

I'm really close to wrapping up having enough material for a live set using the mainly the electribe, and as I'm fine-tuning all the sounds it's getting to the point where half my patterns are getting drop outs with only 6 voices
I was resigned to only having access to 8 parts after seeing how quickly the voices go, but 6 parts is starting to get a bit too minimal for me.

I can get it to cut out at 6 voices, all synth sounds, all with delays on them, if I make 2 of the sounds polyphonic. Some effect types do seem to eat voices quicker, eg the talk filter can cause a drop out where the band plus filter won't. I've tried to be methodical about testing this but there seem to be so many variables. Sometimes the oscillator type will make a difference, then change things slightly and it doesn't, which means it definitely does, I just can't work out exactly how. Overall, I've found that if you are using drum and synth sounds a little bit of setting part priority can get past any voice stealing problems, and on some patterns the voice stealing has added some unintended and very interesting rhythmic effects, which I've kept in there!Tarekith wrote:I'm really close to wrapping up having enough material for a live set using the mainly the electribe, and as I'm fine-tuning all the sounds it's getting to the point where half my patterns are getting drop outs with only 6 voices

Hmm ok I'm cancelling my sampler preorder and getting my cash back..
I want to know exactly what I'm getting and how dodgy the OS is going to be on this new sampler.
My money might be better spent on some elektron gear

don't forget that supposedly these are all the factors that contribute to the 24 voice count:
1. poly mode
2. dual oscs
3. IFX
4. filters
it would be great if Korg could have went into detail about how much these factor into the voice limit, or better yet, include a cpu load indicator in the display.

I'm starting to think my voice stealing issues have something to do with this particular electribe. Just now I was working on one of my patterns and I could get it to start dropping voices with only 2 parts playing, neither of which used effects or the Edit knob, neither was playing more than one note.
Rebooted it and things were working fine again (though I was still only getting my usual 6-7 parts before drops), then after a bit of playing around with it, it started happening again with only two other parts playing. Weird.
I think I need to go for a walk.

Would someone mind giving a couple of my patterns a test, so I can see if this is just me experiencing this?

There's 3 patterns in that zip, all with drums on Part 9-12, and Synths right above them in 1-4. In all three examples, pressing play as is with everything unmuted will typically cause the synth on part 4 to drop and be silent. Now if I mute everything but Part 4, it will be playing fine, until I try and unmute drums on Parts 11 and 12. Usually starts cutting off Part 4, which is only three parts playing.
Doesn't seem right.
Either it's my unit or something fishy is going on, and I'd appreciate it if someone has a second to try this to confirm what I'm hearing or not. Thanks!

I will try that in a while....
