My friends joke that any time my stories are about technology they always begin with, "All I wanted to do..."

In this case, I was working on a song I'm writing and have a combi (I don't use the sequencer) with my tones set up. All I wanted to do was turn on a basic drum track while I work. It's times like this that remind me why I bought the Fantom. I love the Kronos and it's still my main squeeze, but OMG does this UI need a usability update.

In fact, I can't even get the drums to sound in the combi. I have a patch assigned to standard studio kit on channel 10, it's set to INT, it's not muted, the keyboard range is full width, and when I play any key - silence. The tones on channels 1 and 2 play normally.

The Korg video manual basically says, "Hey, we have drum tracks, buy this thing!" Several Google / YouTube searches later I finally get disgusted and just push a rhythm track button on Fantom. Admittedly, I haven't gone the RTFM route yet. Because I thought this would be simple.

I just wanted a simple drum track to give me a groove while I worked on the composition. I'm sure it's easy once you know how, but at the moment I don't know how. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

(And apologies for the grumbling, it's just a total buzz kill to have to stop what I'm doing and deal with tech when I'm in musician mode. Put me on the list wishing they would drag this UI kicking and screaming into the 21st century).

Program mode has a separate drum track, and this is set up in what could be described as a "more conventional" manner.

However, it's slightly different in Combi mode, the Drum Track generator just sends MIDI to the 16 Timbres, and any Timbres that have been set to MIDI channel 10 will respond. Try setting U-AA106 Standard Kit for one of the Timbres and allocate MIDI channel 10 to it. Then go to the EQ/Vector/Control | Drum Track tab, to set the Drum Pattern, and ensure the MIDI channel is set to 10. That should be it.

Thanks, man! I'll give that a try.

That did the trick. I wouldn't have thought to look for the drums there.

Thanks, voip!
