Hi,

I own a Yamaha EL70 amongst other keyboards and have just purchased a Korg i40M to supplement its rhythms and sounds, I have connected it using the global midi option but all I get thro the EL speakers is the drum pattern, other than that no sounds. Obviously I,m doing something wrong as I can Midi my Tyros to the EL OK,

Any help would be appreciated,

Brian.

Hi Pete,

Midi in on Korg to Midi out on EL, I want to play the internal styles on the Korg using the EL as a master, I,ve tried to follow the instruction in the user manual by setting Global, I,ve also tried Keyboard and Piano setting. I can hear drums but no accompliment sounds thro the EL speakers, the arranger light is on the Korg, I,m assuming the EL is not receiving the messages. The EL midi function is limited but it works OK with the Tyros.

I assume I will not hear the accompliment sounds until I can play a chord on the EL, but the EL is not receiving messages from the Korg.

My Midi experience is fairly basic, having had mainly home keyboards for the last 25 years, I,ve not used a module before, and never a Korg so I,m really am a newbe.

Hope you can help.

Brian

Hi Brian

I may be having a senior moment here but I am a little confused.
Quote:
but the EL is not receiving messages from the Korg.

This is what is confusing me - if the EL is expecting messages from the Korg then the Korg's MIDI-out goes to the EL's MIDI in.

Are you wanting to play the i40M using the EL simply as a MIDI controller so you would be connecting the EL's MIDI out to the Korg's MIDI in and hence the Korg's audio outs will go direct through your EL's speaker system (audio in I guess) - this should definitely work….. using the GLOBAL MIDI channel requirements etc on both Korg and EL.

In summary - this is what I am picturing:-

EL-MIDI-out connected to Korg-MIDI-in
Korg-audio-out connected to EL-audio-in (so you can use the EL speakers as a sound device)
Both units have GLOBAL MIDI channel set to "1"
EL doesn't have any MIDI-out filtering set up
Korg doesn't have any MIDI-in filtering set
i40m is in style mode etc….

Tell me (please) if I've got this wrong

Perhaps I need more wine… Wink

Hi,

I thought it was me having the senior moment?. I want to use the I40m as a rhythm machine, using the EL as the keyboard. At the moment the set up is as you describe, EL Midi out to Korgs midi in ,as the manual advises, the Korgs audio outputs go direct to the EL amp, as you say, should work but all I get is the drum pattern, no sounds from the Korg at all.

It plays midi files OK and the Demo sounds OK through the EL, but thats simply using the EL as an amp.

Hope that I,ve explained it better this time.

Best wishes,

Brian. Embarassed

Hey Brian - thanks

Now this should work - it seems that the i40m is receiving OK but not recognising the left hand chord.
Is sync start/memory/split "on/set" on the i40m?

Basically the i40m has to be ready to "play a style"
(apologies if you've already checked this)

I'm trying hard to remember from my i3/i30 days
I'll do some research - have to go to bed now - very late here
Don't give up - I'm sure we'll get it going!!!

Hi Pete,

Problem solved, faulty Midi cable, bought new especially, as I thought using an old one might be a problem, fitted old Midi cable which works perfectly, I now have a split lower manual on the EL with sounds and full acc, I,ll look at getting the split so the rhythms on the lower and voices on the upper, but I,m pleased its solved and thanks for your help.

Best wishes,

Brian

Hi Again,

Set up

EL Midi out connected to Korg Midi out
Korg Audio out connected to EL Rhythm in (Left and Right)
Korg Set to Global. EL does not have a Global option.Midi control consists of Output Upper CH1 or CH4, Lower Ch2 or Ch5. Int/Ext Lead, Synch,EXR. Electrone must be set to Synch int and Korg to Synch. EXT.

Volume of Electrone Rhythm section set to Zero.

Is there any wine left, or should I open another bottle?

Best wishes,

Brian.

Hey Brian

Great news - enjoy your i40m.

I am actually considering a backwards move to an i5m currently for sale locally.

I so loved my i3 and i30 days!!!

Do I need any more gear - NO
Will I buy more gear - YES

There's no treatment for this condition but the wine helps ease the guilt.

Take care

Hi Pete,

Its a great machine now its up and running, I decided to leave the split on the lower manual as the gives me more flexabilty, I can use the upper manual to play the EL sounds or combine the 2, great for big bands.

I,ve just had a good clear out of surplus? gear, including a Technics and a Yamaha S650 plus amps etc which I no longer use but I,m sure I,ll be tempted again.

Let me know if you get the i5m,

Best wishes,

Brian

Hey Brian

Spoke to the guy with the i5M for sale - its a one owner and sounds very good but listening to some good yo utube demos I find that it has several cut down styles which is a shame. Think I would rather buy an actual i3 but no room for more keyboards.

Think I'll give it a miss. Probably just got nostalgic when I saw it up for sale Wink

This gear acquisition syndrome is a killer

All the best with the i40M
