Hi all,

Despite being an iPad music app adictive, I have completely missed Stroke Machine so far. Bought it yesterday, and I am completely blown away. It is, in essence, an Electribe with a touchpad interface. But unlike iElectribe, it comes with far more horsepower.

The Synth engine is a 24 times multitimbral substractive synth with 2 oscilators, noise and transient generator. It comes with decimator and overdrive for each sound, but also with 4 effect busses. On top of this competent synth, it also plays samples (one shot, but still).

While the synth itself would not be too bad as a standalone app, it comes embedded in a groovebox workflow. The groovebox part manages up to 128 patterns , each with 12 drum tracks and 12 melodic parts. Pattern length is up to 16 Bars. It has full motion sequencing, all parameters can be controlled by external hardware with its midi learn function. It also has a step sequencing view where you can edit notes.

It plays very nicely with the Electribe 2, Midi seems to be rock solid, switching a pattern on the Tribe also selects the pattern on Stroke Machine.

Is anybody else using this, and if yes, what is your experience? I think that this opens up a whole new set of possibilities, from extending the tribe with some more powerful sounds up to working around its 4 bar limitation- you could for instance do long chord progressions on a track of the iPad while you tweak or play a part on the Electribe.

Opinions?

I tried this on my ipad2 not long after it was released. My poor ipad was lacking the horsepower to raise performance above pitiful. When i get a new one i'll check it out again.

Hi,

I did a little unscientific test. One kick on the Electribe, one on Stroke Machine. iPad into Audio in, started pattern on Electribe. Both sync perfectly - as in: I am not able to hear any latency at all. Gadget is most much worse.

Then I changed patterns on the Electribe. This forces program changes on Stroke Machine. SM changes program when the next bar starts, so you have to be careful to switch in the last bar of the Electribe pattern. But still, SM does not get out of groove when you do this. The beat display on the SM jtters a bit - will show 98.4 when the beat is actually 98 for instance, but if there is an actual effect, I find it inaudible.

Will do some in depth testing this week.

There are other useful things I stumbled into this evening:

- Midi learn works on all continuous parameters and can be freely assigned per part (!) and are stored with each pattern - this means you could use the insert FX edit on the Electribe knob to control drive parameter in one part and OSC-2 level in another depending on the midi channel.

- Stroke machine remembers the midi channel when you use Midi learn and you can freely select on which parameter it works on in which parts. So you could distribute 12 knobs*16 midi channels to control all parameters of one sound, or several sounds, whatever you want.

- Midi learn even works on FX parameters - you can control the FX for several parts on one FX bus using one knob on the Electribe. Its similar to the Master FX on the Electribe, but more flexible as you have 4 FX busses.
