Original Post wrote: | Hey all!
I really liked the whole sampler contest thing, but I felt that there are a lot of users who may be left out! As such, I decided that I should help to get a contest started for those of us who only have synth models.
Naturally, I'd like this to include ANY synth model, but I'm unsure exactly how to make this an interesting competition in this way. For example, on a single electribe model, we could limit users to a single type of synth oscillator and drum hit or something of the sort, but this would mean a large difference between models!
Definitely want to get something like this started, but also looking for some input! Thanks guys! |
Alright the first contest is underway!
Rules:
- Any SYNTH Model of the electribe can be used, and any number as well (so if you have two EMX, you can use both!)
- Each participant may only use 1 synth waveform (of their own choosing) to craft a track
- No PCM samples are allowed to be used when making the track
- Entries are due by Friday (8/7/15). Simply PM me a link to your entry and I will create a poll
Prize:
- There is no official prize. The winner will choose the rules for the next contest

I'm totally in!
As for ideas for contests -- definitely think that any synth model of the Electribe should be allowed, maybe just the E2? I dunno
- create a pattern/song in a certain genre/style
- create a pattern/song using one type (pre-selected) of synth oscillator or drum sound
- create a pattern/song with a pre-selected "kit", put together by the host
- cover a pre-selected song, or cover a song in general |

Yeah those are all really good ideas! I guess we just have to wait to see if anyone else is interested and then we can set it up. |

Well considering we have three people I'd be willing to do a small contest quick, especially considering I'm relatively sure we all have an e2. |

Oh wow I'm really enjoying the response. Tarekith, considering I've watched your videos for awhile now, I'd love to hear you ideas for how the contest could be formatted, if you have any. |

I deliberately stay away from knowing what fits in to what style because I don't like to be bogged down with that stuff, but I'm in! _________________ 01/WFD - M3 - MS-20 - Volca Bass - Volca Beats - Volca Keys - electribe emx2 - Monotron - KP3+ - iPad with too many Korg apps

I'd participate but I have an EMX, well and an EA1, so if it is e2 only I guess I'm out. |

I don't have a synth electribe but I'm very excited to see that people want to do this.
I have a suggestion for how you might do this but it only works if everyone works on an e2. What if the person who makes the contest creates a pattern file or set of files pre-loaded with sounds. Then everyone is forced to use those same sounds to base their composition on?
Some other more universally applicable rules you might consider. Could be interesting mix and match:
-don't use any of the drum sounds on the device and instead create your own using oscillators
-pick one pcm waveform and base every sound off of that
-make a song where every single part is a different length (i.e. part 1 is 3 beats long, part 2 is 13 beats long, etc...)
-Make a song where every melody was created via pitch knob |

All kinds of ways you can do it:
- People can only use the drum PCM sounds to make their pattern.
- People can't use ANY PCM sounds to make a pattern.
- Make a song using only two parts max.
I've done a lot of this with other music groups, and in general if you leave it pretty open ended like "just make a song" or "just make a pattern" the same few people end up winning each time. Make it interesting, impose some limitations to get people to work outside their comfort zone. It'll push people to learn more about the electribe, and often the results can be more surprising. _________________ Erik M.

I guess I'd be pretty comfortable officially starting with all the replies so far! So i'll update the original post after work, in case anyone new pops in.
The rules for the first contest shall be as follows!
Quote: | Only 1 synth waveform (although you may choose any waveform you like)
No use of PCM samples |
Naturally this extends to all Electribe users, regardless of the generation.
Prize: A (metaphorical) pat on the back! Also, you can decide the rules for the next contest. Winner will be chosen by a poll on here.
I'd say a week to get a song in is probably enough. Just pm me a link to your track and I'll set up the poll.
aaaaaaaaaaand (unless there is some objection) GO! |
