I bought a used Electribe 2, which works fine but the MIDI dongle adapter was a replacement, not the original factory one. It seems to work fine when I plug the E2 directly to a Roland JD-xi; it sends MIDI as expected and works fine. But when run the E2's MIDI out to a MIDI Solutions Quadra Thru box ...

You don't need any app at all to restore the factory samples. On the Sample's product page, scroll down to "Volca Sample Factory Sample Set" where you can download a .wav file that will restore the full set from any computer's audio out: http://www.korg.com/us/products/dj/volca_sample/download.php

If you have headphones or an audio cable plugged in, try removing them. I also had to fiddle with the volume of my iphone to get it to work correctly--loud but not at full volume.
