Some brands of laptop (HP and others I think) have "Beats By Dre" audio built in, which adds compression and EQ ("phatterising") to any audio playback. Hmm. Have you done all the other stuff they advise: turning off "Beats Audio" and other FX, trying at different volume settings and so forth?

I read on another forum that the Volca FM doesn't respond to velocity - can anyone here confirm / deny this? Seems like a bit of an oversight if it's true.

Have you tried clearing the existing samples first - to make sure there's sufficient storage available?
