Definitely in my rant list of very confusing design choices...

BTW I wonder if all programs are used in preset performances?

I don't really see this being possible. The Wavestate has all the original Wavestation samples and it is possible to build the same wave sequences. However, the Wavestate is not a Wavestation nor a reissue of it, it is a "reimagining" and as such it has some substantial architectural differences ...

You just don't have to.
Each layer (A,B,C,D) comes with two flavors: wav sequencing or "Single multisample". The second option works like a traditional rompler. Now selec DRM WS Kit 1 and here you go, one drum sound by key.

Generally accessing pages by modifying rotary controllers which instantly change values is a very bad design. I suppose you know about holding Enter button while touching any knob shows the saved/current value without modifying value itself, turning the knob. Fair point but thinking about Enter ...
