It sounds like the midi files you are using are Type 0, all of the data on one track.
I'm not sure, and I couldn't see anything in the midi implementation chart, but perhaps they need to be midi files Type 1 to work correctly.

Yes!!!!!! Found It (while looking for something else )
Settings - Menu - General Controls - Start Up..... and for some reason the Mic and MicFX boxes were ticked meaning that they were disabled at start up.

I would say the simple way would be buy an audio interface and download a free software DAW package like Bandlab for Windows or use Garage Band if you are running a Mac.
