M3 and Saffire - USB AND Firewire needed?

I'm just hooking up an M3 to a Saffire for the first time. Do I need to hook up both firewire to the Saffire - AND - USB to the computer....or just one (or the other)? Thanks for the help on this in advance...Can't wait to get it up & running!! FYI - running Cubase, if that matters to anyone. Thanks ...

I've got audio cables connected from my M3 to the front of the Saffire. Looks like there's only inputs on the back of the Saffire for surround sound & that's it. Re: the FW. Just so I'm understanding you correctly, you're saying that when I connect the FW, I won't even need audio cables, correct ...

Owned a KARMA back in 2001, sold it in 2004 & bought an M-audio 88-key MIDI module, thinking that I was going to convert over from using Sonar & the Karma --> MIDI controllers, Reason, and Cubase. Ended up hating Reason with a passion after enjoying the KARMA so much. So, I purchased the M3 in June ...

I've had the M3 for a year and JUST turned it on for the first time....horrible, isn't it? Anyway, I might be able to help you out if you tell me which combi. With that said, I assume it would be a good idea to upgrade? I've got an M3 purchased last June (2008). What all is included in the upgrade?
