How different is M3 sound from Triton/TR/X50 synth engine?
Is it worth upgrading purely in terms of sound?

This does sound similar to a joystick issue common in MicroX model.
I believe this happens(in MicroX) after wire breaks off the joystick, then all kinds of random pitch shifting happens, also controls that supposed to control other things, like filter etc... begin to change pitch as well.

I am still torn between the two, M3's ordinary synth keys vs PC3X weighted hammer action and M3's expandability with Radias vs PC3's near-modular synthesis. I am leaning toward M3 73 at the moment, even though for the same money i can get PC3X with nice hammer action keys... But then with M3 you get ribbon, pads and x/y control, while PC3 does not even come with ribbon.

I am not familiar with Prog Metal but, how about perhaps getting PC3 and a used Korg MS2000b or R3?

However, Korg have a brick-wall solid reputation for build quality and that surely hasn't changed. Was that irony or you have never used anything other then Korg??
