Did you ever get this resolved? I am having the same issue.

Did you ever figure this out on Mac OSX? I have the same issue that just appeared one day, now I can't connect and just get the backup screen. All MIDI functions work fine over USB otherwise.

I am looking at buying a used M1 that had the EX ROM expansion added to it. How can I tell that its there and operational?
