Firstly you need either a catchy riff/melody and or a catchy chorus. Although there are many great songs that don't have a chorus. Structure. If it's brand new send it back and get an exchange. The emx should be up and running in about 20-30 seconds. If you fiddle about with it you will void your warranty. You got the same model as me the SM version. Bought mine of ebay, had a dodgy power supply but the seller graciously refunded me the cost of a new power supply. I just got two SM cards of ebay. Both are used but one is 128mb and the other 64mb. Formatted them saved and loaded to check they're ok ...

This may sound like a dumb question but why aren't you using a SD card in the first place?

Have you tried just using headphones? Set the esx on it's own and try using the headphone out to see if the problem happens. if it doesn't then the tubes are ok. In which case it coud be an output problem or the cable to the external unit. If the problem is still there the tubes maybe faulty ...

Phoned Korg UK tech support today and they confirmed my thoughts about the power supply. It is faulty they said it my last a month or it may die tomorrow. So looks like I'll be getting a new one £35 from korg spare dept.
