I've got almost 3 years on my Krome 88 with no issues...

Bought mine in Oct 2012. Never had any issues even after moving it half way around the world...

The headphone jack is always on. The volume control changes both the headphone and the other output jacks. So, with powered speakers, it may be possible that the volume is too low to drive the headphones...
