The ultimate collection of M1 sounds for Korg Legacy Edition

Francois, a good friend of the forum, has collected many of the original user created M1 sound sets from around the Internet and converted them to the format used by the M1 VST/AU in the Legacy Digital Edition. Thank you Francois to taking the time to put this collection together for us ! Additionally he has provided a useful package of supporting documentation.

Note if you have a recent version of Stuff-It expander installed on your Mac ... that will unpack the RAR files for you.

If you downloaded the first incarnation of this collection you will probably want to delete it and download this version instead. This new version uses a file format for the sounds that is much more compact and takes up far less disk space. You can tell if you have the older version of the data because the names of the sound files have the extension '.m1all'. In this updated version the sound files have the extension '.fxb'.

Usage note for Mac OS X users

When you select the File->Load->All Data... menu option within the M1 plugin a dialog box will appear asking you to select the file to open. In order to open a file from this collection you must first click the Enable dropdown menu and select the option M1 All Data (*.fxb) and then select the .fxb file you wish to open in the normal fashion.

What makes this collection interesting is that many of the original M1 websites have long disappeared and were not saved by the Internet archive project.

I even recall downloading some of these banks in 1991 at a time where the web browser didn't exist. Ah, those telnet sessions with a command line interface !

Currently, there are 246 banks. Of course, some of them are user created banks and only contain a few programs. Still, this should give KLC-DE users plenty to listen to.

And the sad thing is.... there will be more in another pack as I have old Atari disks that still need converting

Like Francois, I've also got Atari-based M1 & T1 banks - mine are in various Atari formats, including Steinberg's Synthworks. If I do decide to buy the M1 emulator, I'll want to convert these Atari banks to run with it - I understand that the emulator will read files in "fxb" file format (? whatever that may be).

Is there software that will do a batch conversion of numerous banks of these Atari files into a format that the M1 emulator will import? If so, where can I get it? If not, is there - and can I get hold of - any existing software that will convert one bank at a time?

Or am I left to my own devices? ...

When I bought Native Instruments' FM7 (ie software emulation of a DX7), I found that I was able to write a small program to convert (in one go) numerous Atari-format DX7-bank files to "syx" format, which the FM7 would import. This was fairly easy to do because both formats were essentially a SysEx dump with some additional bytes - my program simply had to extract the SysEx part from the Atari file and add the necessary bytes to create the "syx" file - and, of course, it was trivial to make the program work through a list of files and convert them all in one run.

If I can't get hold of a batch-conversion utility, I'd like to know whether I can expect to be able to do, with Atari-based M1/T1 files, a similar job to my DX7 batch conversion. As I recall, some of the Atari bank formats were also essentially a SysEx dump together with either additional header information or a small program that transmitted the dump over MIDI. I realise that the emulator's file format has to store various parameters that weren't included in the hardware M1/T1, but I'm wondering whether the emulator will import a file consisting of (mainly or entirely) M1/T1 SysEx data. If so, is there a specification available for the file format?

I'm afraid it's all manual work.

From Atari to SysEx, and from SysEx to M1 fxb.

The Legacy M1 will import SysEx files. It's only the files that have Progs, Combis and Global in one that may or may not need work. In my case, a program I was using had saved PCG as Combi followed by Progs followed by Global. So I had to chop the individual parts with a file editor and then everything worked. Just remeber that if your bank contains Progs and Combis, you need to import the Progs first, then the Combis. Once imported, save as an fxb bank.

I guess your FM7 extraction type program could work on your M1 Atari SysEx files.

As for the file format, you can download a document on SysEx and the M1 as part of the pack of docs available.

can someone suggest a tool to transfer the program banks from my hardware M1R to a syx file that the KLC M1 can read? i have all my sounds for the M1 in the old SoundDiver program. but i can not manage to spit out syx files.

OK then, send the SD lib to your M1 and dump the bank from the M1 into something like Bome SendSX on PC or equivalent on Mac.

Hi, I'd like to fully appreciate these M1 .fxb banks, but I don't know how to identify if it's the loaded bank or the default Legacy's M1. So I loaded it into my Legacy M1, but how do i know which programs and combis are from these .fxb files and NOT the default bank?

Can someone specify how I go about finding that out?

Francois - do you know where those Valhalla sounds came from. I have a T series disk that has the M1 sounds plus 100 others of high quality, and I'd like to get them into the M1 legacy emulation.

Your T series disk should import fine so long as you change the sysex a bit. First, change the sysex so it reads M as opposed to T, then use Daz's utility to split the file, and then you can import the sysex into M1 Legacy.
