K49 Display and Assignment issues

I'm having 2 issues with my Kontrol 49 if anyone can help me out, you're a god. First, when I turn on the machine, sometimes there's no display in any of the information windows, the colors are there but now words, I turn the contrast knobs but no dice. Also, can anyone give me a simplified version of how to assign drum tracks to the pads. I use Acid for my productions and the manual might as well be in Sanscrit.

Figured out my own issue, at least with the first problem. My underpowered laptop blew out my display. Had to take it to get fixed. Still can't assign drums though.
