N00b question - What synths are modeled in the R3 presets?

Post by mercifulrelease »

Hi all,

I just bought an R3 a week ago and am loving it so far. I'm a total n00b when it comes to synthesizers in general. Looking at some of the preset names (voice names), it's clear that Korg has modeled the sounds of some classic synthesizers. However, I'm not sure how to decode the names. For instance, I'm guessing "MG Bass" is a Moog sound. Would someone be able to decode all of the modeled voice names and tell us what they're supposed to be modeling? Identifying some of these sounds would greatly increase my vintage synth knowledge.

Thanks!

Some patches are trying to emulate vintage analog sounds (the Radias even has patches that mimic synths from particular songs by Pink Floyd, the Who and Edgar Winter amongst others...none of these made it into the R3 patch set).

But I'd just enjoy the sounds for what they are. Expecting a "Moog bass" sound on the R3 to sound like a real Moog is a way to get disappointed quickly.

OK, here's the obvious emulative patches listed in the manual:

Pr5 Comp, P5 Clav...Sequential Prophet 5
Wurly EP...Wurlitzer piano
MS20 Bass...Korg MS-20
Oddsy Bass...ARP Odyssey
700S Lead...Korg MiniKorg 700s
MG Bass, MG SquLd, MG 5thLd...MiniMoog
Jpt8 Dry...Roland Jupiter 8
OB Jumpr, OB Brass...Oberheim OB8, OBx, etc.
P6 Chord, Poly6 Pad...Korg Poly 6
DW Brass...Korg DW6000/8000
SolinStr...ARP/Solina String Ensemble
Morph 33...Roland TB303?

How close any of these come to sounding like the "real thing" is subject to much debate 8)

Cool, that actually helps out a lot meatballfulton. :P The sounds may not be exact, but now I should be able to at least pick some Moog (or whatever) sounds out of a lineup. My synth vocabulary is so limited, anything helps. Thanks for the quick response!
