Using a MIDI Accordion with the PA800

Post by deanspy »

Hi Everyone,

I just got my PA 800 and it is way cool.

However, can anyone give me any pointers on setting it up for use with a MIDI accordion? I have an Excelsior Midivox Evolution.

Thanks so much.

:D
I just ordered a PA 800. Should be here next week. I also have a midi accordion: Beltuna with King Major midi which I would like to connect to the 800.

Just a few pointers:

I assume a MIDI accordion can be arranged to transmit on two MIDI channels, one corresponding to the chord pinboard and the other channel corresponding to the solo keyboard. Let's say for example that you can set MIDI channel 1 to be the chord pinboard, and MIDI channel 2 to be the solo keyboard

From p214-5 of the OS1.51 manual for the Pa800:

Global -> MIDI -> Midi IN

Set CH01 to be Lower
Set CH02 to be say Upper2

Then from the page menu,

Write Global - MIDI Setup

Then exit and press Style Play
Select your favourite style

Ensure Upper2 is set to the required solo sound, and is unmuted
Ensure keyboard mode is set to Split
Ensure chord scanning is set to Lower
Press Start, then play!

There you go, MIDI accordion playing Pa800 styles, changing chords based on the chord pinboard, and solo keyboard playing the Upper 2.

You can even have someone playing the upper keyboard on the Pa1x using a different sound at the same time!

Best regards,
Rob

Thanks much, Rob. I'll have to try that as soon as my 800 arrives, of course.

Hello All,
I've been using Korg keyboards as expanders with midi accordion for several years. The PA800 since March. Before that I used the PA1XPRO, the PA60, the i30 and before that the i40M and i5M modules. You have a choice of set ups. You can control the arrangements via the chords played on the treble board - for reeally good players - or the bass and chord buttons or the most commonly used, just the chord buttons. Once you get the navigation thing down, you'll be in heaven. The Songbook feature is a real blessing as is the Custom list feature. Many of my gigs don't offer the space for a keyboard set up, so I also use a GEM Genesys XP module when space is limited (it's features come closest of any module to the PA board features). I've been asking Korg to consider offering a Module based on the PA technology but they say that there is no market for a module. I also use a Master Pro 2000 midi bass unit for gigs that call for just keyboards.
Let me say, that even after lo these years playing with keyboard-expanders, I still get excited about what I hear and I'm discovering new stuff daily and the possibilities seem endless.
Have fun with your PA800!
Maybe if we can start a groundswell that will get Korg to put together a module based on the PA800 or even better the PA2XPRO.
Ciao,
Jerry
