OASYS Rack - Concept Design

Hi all.

This is a work in progress. I'm doing this to expand my knowledge of 3D modelling, and since I'm doing this. I may as well model something cool

So as you can see, it's my vision of what an OASYS Rack might look like if one existed.

This is an early preview, so a lot of the textures have not yet been applies to the mode. Buttons sliders and others are all gray. No textures.

Anyway... what do you think of the design The final version will be very detailed. All the sliders lights and buttons work.

However given its size, I think that is best classified as an "OASYS Microwave Oven" -- that thing is HUGE!!!!!

Yes it's big, but a lot of thought went into all this.

It's based on ATX design requirements, so in order to mount a Motherboard, CPU Fans, and all the rest. This would actually be a pretty realistic concept design size wise giving the technology in the real OASYS.

Out of curiosity, if this where real, would the size actually matter to you ?.

I'm not sure I could position a rack unit such that I could easily reach all of the controls.

I would probably want to be able to position the unit similar to how people use the current M3-M, perhaps right on top of an existing keyboard or right above a computer keyboard.

What would be really nice might be something similar to those older Akai racks that had the removable face plate. I am thinking of something modular similar to the M3-61 except:
-- M3-61 consists of module, Keyboard, and connecting cable
-- Oasys rack would consist of module, computer, and connecting cable.

The OASYS "module" part would look similar to this:

I realise you want to stick to realistic motherboard sizes etc... but, its too bulky. It looks like 1990's or earlier design. Think M3 with your design. Make it look sexy yet solid and robust.

Why not have a fold down Monitor on the top that way you can half the size of the box and include 8 sliders and buttons to the left on the front panel with all the other buttons and alpha wheel to the right and your drum pads at the buttom of the front panel.

Or better still, how about making look similar to a desktop console with a fold up Monitor. Make it look like an audio engineers control thingi with all those sliders and buttons and have it connected to a sexy 21inch TFT Monitor or something like that. And think about a different colour ( not silver or black or something that has already been used) do something different with the colour??

You have presented us with a big box - put 'SEX' in there to sell it lol

Hi Martian.

That design is beautiful, but it's only half the image The computer that is needed to drive the controller is missing. So as you mentioned, you would be looking at something on the lines of an AKAI S6000.

Which is fine, and could easily be done to my 3D model above.

But... what if you had the opportunity to design anything you wanted. What sort of shape would you go with in order to have all the electronics in one box, but also in a setup that would suite both studio users and gigging musicians.

The only problem I have with the M3R is that without the keyboard, it fits into nothing else. You can mount it on a rack, so where does it go for the gigging musician.

Hi all.

I'm finished modelling now, so it's onto the textures. This is the fun part as when I skin the model it will start to look real now. Here's a close up image of the little chrome OASYS logo under the screen and the pads.

Hi all.

Here's another render that's much further along. Most of the knobs and lights work now as well as the screen. I've come up with a new design for the knobs too that personally I think look really cool. Rather than a pointer on them, they have an LED.

Next, I have to add all the writing to the front pannel for each button and so on.

That's certainly an awesome looking piece of eye candy Sharpy

My dream Oasys rack would be less glamorous physically; it would just a 1U high rack unit without the touch screen or the knobs/faders etc. that just gives 16 or 32 synth parts with their own individual FX and Karma GE controllable using a Radias style computer editor with the audio streamed via ADAT or FW. Okay so it's not really the Oasys per se, but those synth engines would be awesome in a package more geared towards the modern musician needing quality sounds and KARMA without all the old school workstation trappings. Set the EXi free !
