User Drum Patterns, Is it this hard?

Post by AlanT »

This is my first visit and post to the forum. There seems to be a ton of good info here.

I bought a TR61 a while back to build background tracks for my guitar work. I'm not an experience keyboard player and learning to use the board and program the sequencer has been well.... challenging, but I'm getting there. However, dealing with user drum patterns seems very hard to me. I've read the manuals over and over, but I'm still confused.

I'd like to be able to have additional drum patterns, and be able to use RPPR to add fills and extra parts. I've probably got this all wrong, but it seems like to do this I'd have to create User patterns for each piece I'd like to add, then those User patterns would be stored with the sequence data for that song. So then to use those patterns again in a different song, I'd have to find and load the original song, and copy the pattern to the new song. There must be an easier way.

Is there a way to import pre-built patterns into the User slots? Is there a software solution like in Cubase or Sonar? Could I drive a drum set over a midi channel instead of using RPPR?

I probably have this all balled up. Any help, suggestions, to ideas to help straighten me out would be a appreciated.

Thanks,
Al

Your summation is on par. The onboard presets are the only patterns that are present when you turn the machine on. Yes, it would be nice if one could store the user patterns onboard, but it's not possible. As you said, the user patterns are stored with the sequence, so accessing them is rather limited.

As far as importation, it's like you said, open up the song and load the pattern to the current song.......that's the only way to do it, that I know of.

I wish there was an easier way, but I don't think that there is.

Thanks so much for the reply, but Ouch!! How the heck will I get some expressive drums? I'm going to have to chew on this a bit.

I suppose I could make some songs that only contained drum patterns, then I could pick and choose. But geeze... I'd have to create all of 'em, then deal with remembering or searching to find the right one. Hmmmmm.

Maybe a midi connection to a drum machine might be an option. I don't know much about using midi though. I've worried that I'll spend a lot more time programming and pushing buttons than playing.

Thanks

are these "patterns" that you seek easily recorded into a pattern. i guess what I'm asking is...............can you easily play the patterns you seek?? Using the Triton?.

I finally broke down and opened the wallet and bought an E-kit. Now I can sit and lay down a legit drum track and save the midi data along with the song data on my Trton LE. I am still doing everything with hardware.

If I understand your question right.... no. I don't play drums to begin with, so "playing" them on the keyboard so as to record it into a storable pattern will be another learning opportunity <shrug>.

For my purposes, the best answer would be to have a much larger selection of pre-recorded common drum patterns (similar to the preset patterns already on the TR), that I could load into the User patterns so they could be used in performance or sequence. I haven't found such a thing yet, so now I have to figure out how deep I want to get into this..... drum machines, midi, etc.
