Confused About Scenes

Post by cfurlin »

OK, I'm either incredibly stupid or I just can't find it in any of the docs...

What I want to do: Have a different pattern in each scene for A, B, C, & D. I can't figure out how to change them. I know its possible because the combis and programs have different ones. When I set a pattern in "GE Setup A", for example, the track uses the same pattern regadless of which scene I have set. I don't see an option where I can set a pattern for a particular scene. Maybe its just not intuitive?

The manuals are no help at all. In fact, "scene" isn't even in the index in the operators manual. :-\ Any Karma guru who can help?

The different scenes store different KARMA RTC settings. Put the control surface into KARMA RTC mode (hit the KARMA button, which is in the group of 5 buttons called Control Assign), select a scene and then change KARMA setting using the switches and faders, repeat for each scene. The scenes are effectively 'memories' for KARMA RTC settings. Take a look at how some of the Combi changes the RTC settings when you switch scenes.

Anyway ... gotta run, forgive brevity, hopefully this might point in you in the right direction.

Thanks for responding.

Let me try to explain further. I know how to use Karma and change patterns using the buttons and sliders, but I want to know how to set the Karma 'memories' myself -- create my own scenes. I want to set what pattern plays in each scene. Is there a way to do that?

Once you have your combi set up with KARMA Scenes as you wish, you have to save/write your combi; otherwise you will lose all your edits. If it is a factory preset combi, I suggest you save to a user location instead of overwriting a preset.

As a habit, I set up my prospective combi in a selected User slot. I then go about saving as I work along. If necessary, I'll save different versions tagging them with a numeric e.g. Analogous 1a, Analogous 1b, etc.

The scenes don't let you play different patterns per se. I think that you're thinking that each different scene can use a different GE, that is not the case. You can only achieve different patterns in each scene by modifying the RTC params for the GE being used.

You can turn GE's on or off using scenes however, so maybe you might change patterns that way.

I like to imagine that your choice of GE sets the theme and the scenes allow you to create variations on that theme.

I don't own a M3, but reading I can understand what follows...
Have you ever used a digital mixer or a control surface?
...think about you're using the same controls to change different parameters...
If you have a phisical control, you can assign it to change cutoff in scene 1, resonance in scene 2, attack in scene 3, and so on...it's always the same controller, but assigned to different parameters depending on the scene.

Please, correct me if I've been wrong or incomplete

Hi Diego,

I don't know that you can easily (if at all) control all the Karma scenes and GE's externally. Seems the hard way to do things to me.
