i am trying to turn some of my patterns into songs. when i turn on the song mode i can designate patterns at postions (001, 002, etc.). but i want to use the same pattern (for example D50), but have the different parts come in at increments (for example synth 1 at pos. 001, synth 1 plus drum 1 at pos. 002, etc.) i dont want to change to a new pattern, i just want to change the mute on/off combinations within the same pattern. i've tried this several times, but every time i do it, the different positions all keep the same parts muted/unmuted. nothing changes. for example if i have just synth 1 playing at pos. 001, and then put in synth 1 plus drum 1 at pos. 002, then both pos. 001 and 002 become the same--synth 1 and drum 1 together. the mute/unmuted settings for the previous postion dont keep. is there a way to fix this?
thanks.

you would have to create separate and distinct patterns.
and then link them together the way you want in the song mode.
anyone disagree?

The EMX/ESX plays back each pattern as it is saved as a pattern, meaning the song mode simply selects which patterns to play after eachother. so to make a song with different mutes/unmutes, you need to either save one pattern pr. variation, or, if you for some reason need to save pattern space, make less patterns and mute/unmute manually as it plays back.
I've been doing it for years on my ESX. What I do to get a song building is first create a pattern with all parts running. then just save different combinations of mutes/unmutes in a few (10-20) patterns , and experiment with what parts you'd like to have in the song and not. It may no be the easiest way to make songs, but for the price, what can you expect? I for one find 256 patterns to be more than enough storage for patterns, and even a 16mb smartmedia card will hold 256 more.
I very rarely make anything that includes less than 20 patterns.

What TrondC says. Can be annoying, but there is a way. First set up all the patterns you wanna play with in song mode then use record to set the Part Mute on and off for each pattern.
This does mean playing from the start everytime, but at least you get to make it automatically change them.
It's also best to save the actual pattern with just the song starting parts, if you want to gradually add things in.
Don't forget to save!

Make sure mute hold is ON. Then record the mute/solos in song mode.
