USB Audio Functions

Post by coasterfreakg25 »

Upon looking through features of other synthesizers, I found that many have a USB audio function, not just midi. I realized that the microkorg doesn't have this (does it have any computer connectivity?) and the R3 also doesn't have the USB audio, but it has USB MIDI. So I have 2 questions:
1. Is this important to have a USB audio recording function in a synthesizer.
2. Is the fact that the R3 has a USB MIDI editor a reason to choose it over the MicroKORG?

I appreciate it guys. Just trying to sort out my first synth purchase ;)

I wouldn't choose the R3 over the MK for the editor, but I would choose it for the more flexible sound structure (more effects, more filters, more modulation, MORE POLYPHONY).

USB MIDI will save you on getting a midi interface for your PC, but you will still want an audio interface (there are many, many, many different audio interfaces, USB and firewire interfaces and mixers of many sizes and prices).
if you're just getting in to it, your PC sound card may do just fine (allthough I wouldn't recommend it on a laptop, they general only have a mono mic input).

USB audio basically means that you will be able to record the audio straight off the unit without making any other connections other than your USB.

traditionally like with the microkorg, you would have a seperate or combined midi and audio interface for your pc and use it for both. you will find this on a lot of older gear, usb audio is a relatively new idea.

one downside of USB audio is it generally won't work if you're using another USB or Firewire interface with its own drivers (like the alesis multimix firewire), because you won't be able to select the USB as an input. a lot of hosts will only run one driver at a time.
