Why people buy and then turn around and sell their Oasys? :(

Post by franzlp »

I've noted folk in thei forum that have at some point purchased and then turn around in a realtively short time to sell their Oasys. Now don't get me wrong I know times are tough but if you know times are tough and you do not earn enough to buy and hold on to the Oasys well why buy it? It's quite ashame to turn around and sell such a marvelous device that is now evermore becoming hard to come by. I personally would have never delved into the instrument even if I had the chops and the knowledge if I could not afford it and hold on to it. Seems like a frivolous way to address such a beautiful instrument. As for my Oasys... they'd have to pull it from my cold dead hands first.

Well, I guess for most of these "quickies" a mismatch between expectations and delivered stuff was the reason (not the quick need for cash).

I agree with Charlie, he was being polite on all fronts.

Unless you have lots of time and access to a demonstration Oasys, you really don't know what it can do or how deep it is before you jump up and buy one. My reality was that only one store in my general area had one on display (Guitar Center). In the six times I went to see and demo it, the keyboard room was always jammed with kids banging on everything including the O . Putting on head phones did not work because the noise level in the store was too high to really hear it with out interference.

I suspect many people take a deep breath thinking it's a pancea for everything they need to make music with and then find out they actually have to read a manual or 2 and put some time into the learning curve.

I believe some of them know very little about synthesizers or midi (based on many questions seen in this forum) and just find it way over their head.

You also have to consider that in a few months the credit crunch in our economies will make it very hard to buy & sell. Now is the time to bail out if you're not sure about keeping an O and need the cash. Look how many are listed on eBay this week.

I would definitely consider a second Oasys in case I had problems at a gig. I rely far too heavily on the Oasys now and feel a bit vulnerable.

Anyway, I've looked on ebay and the only ones I can see for sale are new buy-it-nows from Spain.

It is a while since I have seen a genuine Oasys for sale on UK ebay - loads of scams of course from first time sellers but very few genuine.

The times do dictate to a degree but I think it has to do with trying to satisfy an immediate need. When it gets to the work part,(learning the instrument) they realize that they don't want to put in the time and sell it and go for something they think will get them immediate results. Short sighted, but prevalent in today's world of wanting immediate gratification.

Here is a typical Oasys scam here in the UK:

http://london.craigslist.co.uk/msg/861609208.html

Copy of e-mail reply to my enquiry:

Hi ,
The Oasys is in great working condition, has no scratches or dents. I can assure you that the oasys is full operational.Unfortunately for the moment i am outside of my state for the next 3 months due to my new working contract ( i am a construction engineer ). When i have received this working contract, i have decided to close the transaction using a Third Party Agency (This type of agency will take care of all the transaction details).
A transaction closed through this agency will assure safety for both buyer and seller at the same time. The name of the agency that i
prefer to use is The OnLine OutPost. This is a company provided by eBay for transactions closed over the Internet. It is very safe, recommended by eBay and
also by Craigslist. At this moment the product is located into The OnLine OutPost custody. I have left it there because in case we`ll agree to close the transaction they will take care of all the arrangements.
If you are interested to purchase the product please feel free to mail me for more information regarding the transaction terms.

Thank you !

Note he is working outside of his state......which is interesting as we don't have states in the UK!!!!

Anyway I have replied as if I want to buy so I can make a nuisance of myself

i agree
they feel that the O is a one button wonder. just watch peoples eyes in the store when you hit the Karma button. It's a great selling point but reality sinks in when they get the thing home. These people find that you have to 'work' to get the sounds you want. not all the presets are in your genre. ( of cousre this is so the O appeals to a larger customer base)
they quickly run through the presets in their type of music and find they they want more. BUT they are too lazy or busy to delve into a manual to make more sounds they want. so they sell the O and go and buy another board that has more sounds they use as a preset.

Case in point: i've seen a few people that want to make "beats". look at youtube or myspace and you'll see what i'm talking about. they hear some combis on the O, hear what Karma does, and snatch it up. then they get home or where ever and find that they have to 'work' the get the sounds they want. they wanna make beats in less than three min. it takes time on the O to do alot of things. they are not willing to invest time learning the system. they want buttons to do it all for them. press this button for this. press this turn this knob.instant gratification. it doesnt work like that...... oh well sell it and get an mpc5000

the O has been the best part of my rig since i bought it. ( and yes i was lucky enough to have bought it on it's release date in 2005) ( and i was unlucky enough to have to spend the initial $10,000 price tag too) My family came upon hard times and i had thought about selling the O. But with what it does and the power of the sounds and korg actually following through with the udates i knew i could never replace her. besides i could never get out of her what i had in her.

i guess what i'm saying boils down to this..... the sales guys sold a few people the sizzle ....and they got home and it had gone cold so they turn around a resell it

those of us that keep the O didnt buy for the sizzle or even for the steak...with the power and capabilities of the O we bought a butcher shop.
we shall never go hungry
just skidded off the road in middle of the learning curve

Daz,

Good spot. I hadn't noticed that. Guess I'll never be like Columbo :o

My guess is that if anyone is daft enough to fall for the scam, they will be delivered an Oasys box weighed down just enough to seem realistic so that you sign for it from the deliveryman. I think that's how it works.

BTW Ebay uses no outside companies.....except pay-pal. I dont use craigslist so i have no clue the legitimacy of that claim. IMHO niether one uses an outside company
