Recording soundcard for Linux?

Post by Stilo »

Hey guys,

does anyone have a recommendation for a PCI soundcard with 4-6 ins/outs, 24Bit/96kHz, that runs on Linux without any problems? I find it very hard to find something that is not reported to have any flaws or problems.

Thanks.

Hi!

Have you already checked some M-Audio packages?
The Delta series is quite old and maybe someone developed good audio drivers for it.
E-Mu is good too, but maybe you'll have some troubles to find drivers for it.
I think that as you go deep into the high tag of soundcards you'll find a lot of problems to make it running on Linux, as they are very dependet from their software drivers.

Yes, I checked out pretty much all the major manufacturers, but you always find reports about one thing or the other not working properly. I figured there might be at least one specific card that works as it is supposed to. I guess I just have to try out a few and see what works best. Maybe even go Firewire.

Hi!

Well, the FW way sounds even more difficult to me...
I guess it needs more specific drivers, to support the proper FW comunication...
BTW, I hope you the best with sound cards under Linux, that's why I choose Mac

I thought so too, but there seem to be some quite well supported interfaces that hopefully work.

Anyway, thanks for the comments.

The RME Hammerfall series is very highly recommended.
Have you checked out http://www.linux-sound.org/hardware.html ?

Yes, I came across that site too. I think I got a better overview already what works better and what not. The RME stuff though is still a bit pricey for my needs.
