December 2008 OSAM Stephen

Finally some time to spend recording.

This was all built around the first chord, which I stumbled on while noodling around on the M3, the rest just seemed to fall together.

I thought about writing some lyrics, and making a Christmas song out of it, but figured my singing would diminish it.

It's very moody, but I really enjoyed doing it.

What are those chords, well, they're just beautiful. And you picked all the right notes to play this into a strong melody. I'm actually amazed by this. It's almost up to par with the harmonics I hear on like Brazilian Jazz and that sort of thing. I love this. And it is not at all just plucking some notes along with a standard progression. This feels like a fully fleshed out song from someone who really knows what he's doing. And yes, one more and we're done here. Well, for this osam anyway.

I was noodling around, and played a C bass note, over what seems to be an F#minor9,flat 5, F#-A-C-E, You tell me, ??? then it's Fminor, with an E on top, and so on, just wierd stuff that sounds cool together, like the Fmaj7/9 with a G bass.

I'm sure glad it SOUNDS like I know what I'm doin', cause I certainly don't!

Yes...very VERY nice chord progression! Bass notes can completely change the face of a standard chord. The chord would be a Am6 technically with a C bass. Most people would play a D bass and it would just be a D+9 chord.

Ellll might have a little more insight into that though.

The guitar sound is very even. Very smooth. This warmed up a chilly day!

Of course, I should have considered that, too simple I guess.

That's something I do often, when trying to come up with a new composition, I'll play a somewhat unusual chord like that, and experiment with the bass notes, the problem I have, is since I don't transcribe, or even notate my music, is remembering what I did later on.

This is another jsf smooth groove, hanging by the fireplace with a bottle of wine song. Very nice.

Yea - bass notes on chords totally change the flavor ... I personally like the description with the b5 but thats just me

Ya know - this was so smooth that I didn't even hear the chords looping around - it just kept on going - very cool .. ugh I mean smooth man!

Man you didn't waste any time on getting in to this months tune! Isn't it great to be motivated and inspired at the same time!

Art, it's so true, that the bass note can really change the mood of a chord, I remember long ago, when we did a version of Phil Collins' IN THE AIR TONIGHT, and the bass held the D, while the chords changed to C, then Bb, and it created so much mystery, and tension, I just love that!

It's really beautifull!
And, to be honest, I think that if you find right words, you should have to sing exactly what you played with the guitar, as it's brillant! The melody is perfect, you just have to turn it in verse, bridge and chorus...and you're done!
It should work great as Christmas song!

AN additional instrumental line would be nice somewhere...; however as a guoitar statement...it's complete and worthy...

Hi John, I tried adding another guitar part, but deleted it, then another EP, and didn't like that, so I left it as is for now, but who knows what evil...I mean...What the future holds?

Hi Stephen

Another lesson for me in great quality music - I decided to just enjoy the song and not try to analyse the chords, however tempting that is. I do love interesting chords though and you certainly create some beautiful tensions here with unusual bass notes.
