PC CDR compatibility with bog standard CD players...

Post by ausser »

Hi,

I'm having diffs getting Audio Cd's that I burn from my PC to run on ordinary CD players - CD walkmans etc.
I'm using one of those 50CD stacks - Verbatim CDR's MAX52.

I've tried burning at slow speed but to no avail.

So i'm wondering if a firmware update should be tried - and should that fix the problem?
Also - I use Roxio.

My PC DVD/CD Burner is a Sony DVD RW DW-Q30A.
Current Firmware is stock YYS2.

From net searches and threads I've gleamed that there is a YYS6 available - but I'm kinda reluctant to go the Firmware upgrade route in case of hidden compatibility minefields with other devices etc.

Anybody had any issues with their DVD/CD Burner-readers not making disks that play on standard CD players?
Any potential resolutions/suggestions?

Peace
Ausser.

I also tried a direct copy of a CD that works in my CD Walkman - via Roxio "Copy Disc".

Still the same problem - Discs burned on my PC using Roxio won't play in my CD Walkman.

Wondering now could it be the Verbatims - 40+ left of the stack-
Roxio or my PC or my DVD/CD burner burns the disc completely alright,
but it won't play on other CD players.

Peace
Ausser.

Hi ausser

You have really good disks disks and the software that should do it. Firmware is unlikely to be the cause, but if you can update it, go for it.

Are you sure your closing the session ?. The majority of CD Players will not read the disk if the session is open.

Also when burning there are usually 3 options.
Disk At Once
Disk At Once 96
Track At Once.

Best to use the first one if you want a 2 second gap between your songs, or the last one if you have mixed your tracks so the fade into each other. Say away from the middle one.

Regards.
James.

some older CD players will not play new CDs, typically those that are more than 70min

for example you now get 800mb/80min CDs, which will play in most modern CD players but some still have problems

Thanks Guys,
Good advice.

Funny enough, after wondering had I left a session close box unchecked, I was just about to start suspecting the media...

BUT! I discovered the problem - Its my damn CD walkman.

Even weirder - My brother has the exact same CD walkman - a Goodmans from Argos.
They, my PC Burned Audio CDs, play fine on his and also on the TV room DVD/CD Player.
So huh, ourfella' got the good Goodmans - I got the flamin' Dud!.

However ordinary Commercially produced CD's, recent ones, play fine on my 'dud' Goodmans...I tried CD lens cleaners etc..no joy..
I wonder, however, are commercially produced CD's, even modern ones, printed to the old 74min format? eg a thicker lasergroove maybe or somethin' :?
and is that somehow the reason why my Goodmans plays commercial CDs - but not my PC burned 80min Cds...?
Even though my brothers exact same model will play my PC 80min audio...?

I also tried burning of a different CD burner - off a laptop using the exact same Roxio version of the same installation CD...
Same 'no go' with my 'dud' - 'no problemo' with my brothers 'good' Goodmans...story...!!!
So....

Why the hell does it play shop CDs then, I wonder?

Peace
Ausser.

PS: Sharp whats the 96 thing...?
It has to do with copy protection, EDC & ECC information being embedded into the tracks. Really the only time you should use it is if your trying to copy a protected game, or Audio CD.

Hi Ausser. I had problems with Roxio and so uninstalled it. I now use a freebie CD Burner called CD BurnerXP and have no problem playing Disks in any player. Give it a whirl. It's FREE.

:D

will do Mr. NnE.

Just so you know - I had worse problems with Roxio a whille back - where it wouldn't even start some of the apps or tools.
It was a problem with .net framework being addled on my system.
What cured that problem, was when I re-installed XP and built the updates, right up thru to .net Frameworks 3.0 or there abouts.
then Roxio 'Functioned' as it should.

However - I'll try that app you recommend when i get around to it - and see if has any baring on my 'dud' Goodmans CD walkman.

Peace
Ausser.

Thats a great little app - NnE.
Does both DVD and CD - nice skins as well - looks very tidy.
Also light weight and loads up in a sec or two.

Unfortunately, no change with my 'dud' Goodmans - but a Fab piece of software all the same - and FREE!
thanks.
