eBay... do you know this?

Post by laughing_bear »

Hi,

I never dealt with eBay in my life, and I find it all a little confusing. i was wondering, may be one of you folks who has experience in this can tell me something.

Say you purchase something like a console from the US, you pay the bucks and the console is delivered, then you find that it is a piece of s**t, the Pre's are blown, the knobs and faders don't work, something like that.

Now there is that thing about private sale, no return and no warranty, which means basically you would be screwed, right?

Hi laughing Bear. Even if the terms of sale are 'no returns', this means Returns that are still of merchantable quality and NOT of un-merchantable quality ie, Broken or not as described. The first thing to do is to email the Seller via ebay and politely ask for an explanation and describe what your problem is. If they get back to you with a reply saying that they are willing to take the goods back then you will most probably lose out on the postage and packing but get a full refund minus the postage. Good Result!
If they don't answer or refuse to look at your claim then you have to inform them by email via ebay that you are going into Dispute. You then contact ebay with the details of the Dispute and Claim against the Seller. They will look into it for you. You must give the Seller adequate time to reply to your emails, say at least 24 hours or more if weekends are involved. Hope that helps. Good luck :!:

Thanks for that! Sounds like potentially a lot of trouble if something goes wrong. I think I rather leave this out, too much hassle. Good for selling though, looks like a lot of people do not hesitate purchasing on eBay.

I've bought a lot of 2nd hand Musical equipment on ebay never had a problem, but I always try and buy something that I can pick up myself in most cases or ask the seller if its possible to view it prior to bidding if its close enough to make a trip, the few things I've had posted were fine but were low value items or non fragile stuff.

I've never bought anything outside of the UK for the reasons listed by yourself, although I would say most sellers are genuine well the ones I've dealt with have been fine, but you hear of allsorts of horror stories about things being listed as working only to arrive damaged or dead, only to see the seller blaming the postal services etc.
I also try to deal with Cash on collection methods rather than Paypal or money transfers,I would rather have a little extra travel costs to pick up the item than be scammed,at least this way I know I'm only handing over money once I've actually got the goods in my hand, this also normally gurantees your not going to get into a dispute over something being falsely advertised or damaged etc or get ripped off.

Be very careful of Ebay

Post by John Hendry »

Be very careful of Ebay and Paypal. If you have a problem you are in for real hassle and target for ripoffs instantly selling. Most people get by but some don't as well. I may be in scam with bidder on EBay now selling WSA1, see what happens and Paypal has secuity issues that got my password from me in cordinated sign up monitoring them.

Hi Guys. I do appreciate the fact that a lot of negative things have been said and have happened on Ebay sales but there are far more positives. I've been buying and selling on ebay for years and only once has someone attempted to scam me. I lost out on that occasion as I was charged selling fees for relisting as I was threatened with negative feedback by a supposed Buyer who let me down and I didn't think that was fair. I relisted and was charged again, however, after investigation, the 'Buyer' was kicked off ebay. Ebay have now taken steps to stop that situation happening again. I have 100% Feedback because I follow the rules of both Buying and Selling. You just have to be careful in what you do. It is generally safe to buy from abroad if the Seller is of good standing and feedback, however it would cost you in return postage if something is wrong. Better to Buy in your own Country and It has been stated that it's better to go and see the goods before payment. Good idea if you possibly can. I've travelled over a 100 miles to collect a big price item, like a Keyboard and then payed after trying it out to my satisfaction. Genuine Private Seller's will allow you to do that. 'Power Seller's' would not as they are a registered Business on ebay so you have Buyer protection anyhow.
