R3 fx section failture?

Post by danx »

Hi

I have a second hand R3 and i have noticed that the FX makes some random click sound like digital distortion.
The only way to get off this sound is turning off all FX.
So could it be a faulty FX board?
Anyone have had experienced something like this?
Maybe open the unit and check cables or something?

Thanks in advance

Cheers

I don't think that the effects and the synth are on seperate boards. They *may* not even be on different chips. Anyway there isn't much you can do in opening it.

if you are playing your own patches, then it is very possible to achieve clipping in a program, which sounds particularly bad with reverb etc. or if you are pushing the EQs up to boost the level.

you can also get artefacts in the delay from jittery tempo, which has been a problem on some R3s.

good idea to test:
if you turn on some effects, on a default initialised patch, do you still hear distortion?

This clipping sound appears on default factory presets. In fact every time i turn the FX on.
I had reduce every osc,amp to 100 and even trim (fx) when it was possible.
but the "clip"remains.
I´ve checked which FX produce more clipping on"init prog" and seems to be all modulation (chorus, phaser) and reverb delay, delay mod.
The "clip" gets worst and frecuent when Fx 1+Fx2+Master Fx are in use.
It appears less when just one FX is in use.
The Filter,Wah and Distort FXs doesn´t produce any problem.

Thanks for your answer

Hi danx,
It might be a good idea to check your tempo value. Apart from reverb, all the FX you mentionned can have some parameters that can be modulated by tempo(BPM). Maybe you bought one of the R3 that were affected by a bug(tempo changing randomly) some time ago. You could try to change those parameters so they are modulated by a frequency(Hz) setting instead of the patch's tempo and see if the problem disappears. Good luck.

Hey!
I've checked the tempo value of my R3. I used the ableton live with the external clock of the R3, and even when I didn't push any button or knob, the tempo value that I see in ableton was changing 128~129.
Is it a bug in some R3? Are there R3 that don't have the bug?
May I repair my synth?

Yes, check on this web site and you'll find people with that problems and i think if my memory serves me well that Korg knew about it and issued a comment on models with serial numbers xxx to xxx.

Thanks for your advice.

I´ve tried changing tempo modulation FX to freq as suggested but the problem still there.
I´ve no tempo problem btw.

It´s some FX malfunction cause turning off FX fix the problem.
Besides sometimes one channel goes out.

I´ll need to save some money to send it to service.

Hello I just bought a B-Stock R3 that has the same symptoms. Pissed off about it since the ad for the purchase of my B-Stock was that it was inspected by the factory and re-sealed. Anyhow I was wondering if you had yours repaired? Or anyone elese here on the forum who had this happened.

I had send it to Korg service and it will cost me 48 dls and will be ready in two weeks.

So it seems to be a hardware flaw.

Good Luck
