two sampling questions...

Post by ferchis »

I've been searching the forums but haven't been able to find an answer to these 2 qs:

1- i've just downloaded awave studio 10.2 to convert wav files or sounds into PCG files and tranfer them to the tr, but in the drop-down menu of formats to which I can save it, THERE'S NO PCG!!! there's, however, KSF (the sample format), but I thought I would be easier just to save it as PCG so I can load it and leave it there as a new prog. can I do this? can I save a wav sound to PCG?

2. is there a way to PREVIEW (prehear) the sounds in a file I've downloaded. 4 ex, I've just got a bunch of piano progs from the download section here at the forums, but there are 128 of them in the file!!!! so, I would like to HEAR them prior to saving them into the tr. can this be done?

cheers!

PCG stands for P= Program, C=Combi, G=Global
PCG files do not contain PCM data which is sample data.

The files you need to generate with Awave are ksf and kmp files. The ksf file is the actual sample data, and the kmp file is the multisample / keymap file.

Yes, touch the PCG file in media mode and select OPEN. This opens the PCG file and lets you see the contents inside. You need to keep using the OPEN button until you and see all the programs within the PCG file. Once you can see the programs, touch the name and the sound will now play when you press the keys.

Sharp.

thanx sharp for the reply, but how could you then explain that I downloaded the monster lead from trinity and it was contained WITHIN A PCG FILE which I saved onto a particular location and now stays loaded forever (which is great, just I wanted so I don't have to load it every time I turn it on). it was a pcg file, not just a sample (i.e., it was a complete PROGRAM by itself).

and regarding the other question (prehearing the sounds before i save them somewhere in the synth), I STILL CANNOT DO IT!!! (I'm so angry!!! :x ). i'd already done everything you told me before, but the previous sound I was working with (be it combi or prog) just keeps ringing, i can never hear the programs inside the file, which is exactly what i need to do so as to choose the best one!!!!!

any other ideas? is there anything I'm not doing?

what would you do concerning the wav sound in awave? would you save it then as a KSF and then WHAT??

cheers!

No, everything is as I said. A PCG file cannot hold PCM data. It's only a collection of settings.

The monster lead works simply because it's pointing to the PCM data KORG included on the ROM chip. It's not using new samples. Just what you already had in your keyboard with new programming assigned to the samples.

The only sounds you can preview exactly like I explained are ones that do not contain new sample data and work exactly like the monster lead sound above.

If you wish to audition sound that come with new samples, you must load the sample data to memory before using the OPEN option to listen to the PCG file contents.
what would you do concerning the wav sound in awave? would you save it then as a KSF and then WHAT??
There's no point in converting anything to a KSF file. A KSF file is in no way any different than a WAVE file. It will load exactly the same way into your Triton.

To get the benefits of AWAVE you would have to create full mulitsamples. This would then generate KMP and KSF files so that when you load them, they are instantly playable and assigned to the entire range of the keyboard.

Sharp, I think you are too used to your M3 or OASYS, in the Triton line (at least in the Le, TR, etc), you can't preview a program in a PCG simply by highlighting it, you have to load it from inside the PCG.

I usually overwrite A01 (or does it go down to A00? its the first one anyway) because I wasn't very keen on that preset.

once you are browsing inside the PCG file, you should be able to load/write any single program or combi using the utility menu.

as for using the awave program, I would suggest you load all of the sounds into awave, assign them to keys, then save as a KMP file - this also automatically converts them to KSF anyway. and this is the whole reason why you need awave - because you don't have the sampling mode where you can assign the samples to keys and make multisamples unless you have the expansion.
as Sharp just explained.

KORG added this feature years ago to the Triton line and I used to use it myself on my Triton Studio. The TR is not as old as the Triton Studio so I would be very surprised of the TR does not have this function too.

you should be... it hasn't got it. and it doesn't work either with samples as you explained (that don't contain sample data), because I CAN'T even preview the monster lead, i had to save it onto a prog location to hear it.

so, guys, the only way to go about this is to choose a prog i don't like and use it as the loading zone to which I would save any prog just to test it... it's not a bad idea, at least it would give me the chance to actually hear it and then choose whether to keep it or not...

on the other hand, is it difficult to use awave, as you both said, to create this multisample? all I wanted is to have certain sound effects (such as wind, or someone shouting, 4 ex) in a particular program (much like the crazy drum kits that have speccial effects and weird sounds) so I can use it by itself or within a combination.

sorry guys to insist, but i still don't get how to convert A WAV SOUND into a kmp or whatever it is i need to load it into the memory.

for ex, i've got a wind sound (very short wav file) and would like to load it into the tr so as to use it on its own (as a prog) or within a combi (also as a prog but one within it). i've tried using the batch conversion wizard in awave 10.2 and made it a kmp, but the result was chaos!!!! when i tried loading it in the tr, all my prog A bank was erased!!!!! luckily i found out how to restore it and everything was alright, but...

ALL I WANT IS TO TRANSFORM WAV SOUNDS (maybe as special effects) INTO A READABLE FORMAT FOR THE TR AND PLACE THEM IN A PROG SLOT!!!!!! is that so hard to do?

thanx!!!!!

ok, let's think that you convert your "wind.wav" to a "wind.kmp"
-then you must load your wind.kmp to your TR.
-Then you must create a program that uses that wind.kmp sample.
-then you save that program (and you can then use this program in combi aswell)
-then you just have to load the wind.kmp to your board everytime you power up (you don't have to load .pcg's if you have the program in your keyboard, because it stays in memory unless you overwrite it, but samples are erased everytime you power-down.)

You can't use this in Triton Classic for sure, and I think that Triton Lé and TR lack this function aswell. Triton Studio and Extreme are only ones in Triton line that can preview programs on external media.
