I would like to see an update to Legacy Cell

Post by jsepeta »

It would be cool if Legacy Cell were updated to allow cross-modulation across all the synths in the Korg Legacy collections. This would actually give Korg some competitive functionality vs. Native Instruments Kore + Komplete. Imagine routing an M1 or Wavestation through an MS-20, or layering a Monopoly with the M1? Well, I guess I could use Main Stage or some DAW program to produce similar results, but it's not quite the same as using a korg kontroller and the legacy cell interface.
Korg synths I've owned or still own:

01R/W, 03R/W, 05R/W, CX3 organ (pre-MIDI), CX3 organ (w MIDI), DS-8, 707, DSM-1, EX-8000, Karma, M3, M1-REX, M3R, MS-2000R (Blue), MS-2000BR (Black), MicroKorg, N1, N1R, N5EX, NS5R, NX5R, Poly-800, EX-800, Poly-800 II, TR Rack, Triton, Triton Rack, Wavestation SR, Wavestation A/D, Volca Beats, Volca FM, Volca Sample, X3R

ANY update would at least tell us that Korg doesn't consider their VST product line dead. A 64 bit compatibility update would be welcome, too.

I think that LegacyCell was an "afterthought" anyway, just a little something extra, not really a piece of software that had its full potential realized.

There is a major difference between Kore and MainStage though - MS is dedicated to performing, and performing only: you can't use it as a plug-in. Therefore, you can't build Combo type patches with it and use them in your DAW projects on a single track. Granted, you can always load the plug-ins you want in separate channels and get the same result, so that's not really an issue, you can't just "play" with it like you can on LegacyCell or Kore or any other plug-in that supports building multi-layer patches.

Kore on the other hand is dedicated to two things - 1) navigating the massive jungle that is the Komplete patch/preset archive with its very helpful "attribute" browser, and 2) creating multi-layered Combo/Performance patches.

As great as Kore is as a concept - even to this day it has one MAJOR, major flaw: on modern dual core processor computers it still only utilizes ONE core, which makes it ATROCIOUSLY heavy on your CPU. You'll find yourself hitting into the "reds" in no time, unfortunately making it almost unusable in the Combo/Performance patch building sense.
