I'm finding the requirement that you hold the MUTE button down and then select the parts to mute to be holding me back.
I'm trying to use the korg for live performance. Having to hold down the mute and then hit the part requires a large amount of dexterity, especially if you're doing it with one hand only and also trying to do something else with your other hand on another piece of kit. Ideally the mute button would always be down and I could pute parts like keys on a piano.
Does anyone have a work around for the mute
How are people finding controlling the korg from external midi devices? I looked into it but you can't seem to control the MUTE button from an external midi device.
Having to hold mute button.

According to the manual, the only buttons that can be controlled by MIDI are the part buttons.
I'm with you though, man. I'd love to control my ER-1 with an FCB1010 foot pedal -- imagine 1 switch for each of the 8 parts, 1 for Mute, 1 for Unmute, and the expression pedals mapped to Mod Speed and Mod Depth. Now that would give you some sensible control while your hands are otherwise busy playing guitar, topping off your beer, or cleaning your rifle.
C'mon Korg, wake up. This is right up there with not MIDI mapping the KP3's sample button.

If you're too challenged to mute parts, you should be using pattern sets.. which will let you select patterns using just the part/step keys. Just save variations of your wanted patterns ahead of time. Makes for less obnoxious repetition as well.
also..
According to the manual, the Mute button can be controlled by MIDI NRPN.. as expected.
You can easily mute/select parts with a decent midi pedal. If you're just switching basic parts on and off for some variation.. again, pattern sets would be a better way to go.
If you're not going to perform the esx/emx as a live instrument, why pay any attention to it at all. Just use pattern sets.

any chance you can explain MIDI NRPN to a lay person, it's over my head.plosive wrote:

I am just beging to incorporate my ESX with Ableton, if I could send a message from Ableton to mute parts (say from a dummy clip) that would be awesome...
thanks
There is a fairly simple hack in which you solder a small toggle switch in-line with the mute button. Flipping the switch is the same function as holding down the mute button. See http://www.sequencer.de/korg/korg_electribe.html
