Good reading lots of usefull stuff, thanks ruso!
Have any of you looked into more deeply what kind of frequencies the ESX likes/dislikes?
Like how do you prepare your samples before moving it from your computer to the sampler? What frequencies to boost, cut and so on or other stuff that you do on pretty much every sample.
All I do now is normalize and sometimes fade out the end of samples to get rid of clicks. Sometimes it sounds good, some times not so good..
Ill look into the structure of my good sounding samples more when Ive got time, busy having fun atm
.
Oh I also route the sound from my laptop in the "audio through" part of the ESX to get and idea what the tubes will do to my sounds.

I'm a newbie who just got a used electribe. How do you get new tubes, what kind do you get, and how do you install them?
I'm going to read the rest of your post & all the forum. I am just learning how to record patterns. Lot to learn!!

My recommendation for a pair of very well priced and wonderfully sounding tubes is a MATCHED pair of EC803-S from euro-tubes.com
They are silky smooth crisp organic and metallic sounding.... Work GREAT with an overdriven synth bass line on the emx...
The esx has a bit less distortion capabilities and a set of EC83-S would be a better match for that machine in my opinion. They provide a bit more of a rough sound with the tube gain turned up (don't get me wrong.... everything still sounds crystal clear compared to stock tubes and no dirty destruction distortion)...
Good luck!
Oh and come hang out on my forum (http://electribe-forum.com) we got a lot of very knowledged musicians and compulsive knob tweakers hanging out.
oh wow...that easy huh...im a PC / Laptop technician haha so it should be easy...im one of those people who, yes, read most of the manual and one of the first pages was a big warning about replacing the valves...they are not meant to be removed and are not serviceable...KORG using scare tactics on people who want better quality???
where can i find these "new and improved" tubes anyways?

EC83-S (for ESX) https://ssl.eurotubes.com/cart/index.ph ... gory_id=12

EC803-S GOLD: https://ssl.eurotubes.com/cart/index.ph ... ory_id=107
They claim that gold pinned ones provide cleaner sound but I honestly don't see how the difference could even be audible..... anyway the gold ones look cooler

Maybe I'll be unpopular, but in many cases I appreciate the emx's compressor. Yes, it is quite gross, but that grossness can result in some nice unexpected sound. If used considering the artifacts, you can manipulate those artifacts.
I have to say that my personal style is quite noisy, so that's probably a reason why I find it "comfortable". But maybe I'm the only one

Just got the EMX1 and the ESX1 off Ebay. I am a guitar player and wanted to use the machines for backing tracks. Thanks for the forum and tips. Keep em coming. So I am 60 years young. I have been recording for over thirty years. I am a MIDI Guitar expert. Thanks for that TUBE info. I use alot of external compressors to the mix. It is my way of cleaning up the landscape to give room for all the other sounds. I record into two synced Roland 2480's. I agree about every thing you said about limiting the EFX and the envelope of the sound. Later Johnny G Long Island..
Smooth Jazz guitar over electronic trks

Is this still the case for an EMX1-SD?The first tip I will say is GET NEW TUBES. They don't only change the tone and make electribes sound more smooth and organic, but they also give you a lot more leniency in leveling , filtering and mastering.

I've read though several threads on this topic, but I still have a few questions, as many of the posters seem to be from the UK, and the MX unit seems to have bigger issues than the sx in terms of noise with the original tubes.
1. Is there a difference between the type of tubes the mx and the sx are best suited for? I have an sx, but many of the posts seem to indicate the mx is the unit that has more of a problem with noise, so what tube upgrade would best suit the esx? I currently have the original tubes in mine, and it is a brand new unit.
2. I live in the US. What would be the best place to order upgraded tubes for an esx?
EDIT:
1 Looks like Groove Tubes GT-ECC83 Gold Series get the vote for the esx.
2. ebay, or one of the euro stores? Someone bought them off e bay. Guess I'd best go shopping.

You might want to seperate mix into a bass-lowmid and compressed-group like so:

gives you this kindof mixdown:
