Hello all, I was just wonderin somethin about the KP3.
I looked in the manual and couldnt really make out if this is how it works, or if it works in another way. So basically i want to match beats from the kp3 and the EMX-1. The idea is to extend the EMX-1's performance by adding 4 more layered loops that can be added and taken out. I was wondering if the midi connection would be able to sync the beats on the sample buttons of the kp3 with the beats on the EMX-1. So each beat starts and runs throughout at the same speed whether it is activated or not, works just like the EMX-1, basically just an extension.
Is this possible? am i just missing somethin in the manual, i can say i dont understand midi all to well yet so any help is greatly appreciated.
I also understand it might not work like that, but can the tempo sync then andthen i could just activate the beat at the beginning of the loops being played through on the emx, basically start beat 1 on the kp3 at the same time as beat 1 on the emx. On my kp3 my sample beat loops keep getting started at random points within the beat, andthen it takes a little while to get it organized and matched, im just trying to avoid this and wondering peoples methods basically.
ALL input is fantastic!! ive been dying to figure this little step out!

You can reset the 'beat no. 1' on the kaoss by holding shift and pressing the tap tempo button, so you can match this to your EMX-1.
Plus if you haven't already, download and install the latest firmware from the korg website.
This gives you different sample playback options, and you can adjust the volume of each sample independently of each other.

All good points. Something you can learn more about by searching for the subject of your post elsewhere in the forums concern timing issues between the KP3 and other devices. The short version: Connect 'em via MIDI, setting the KP3 as master clock, and you'll have the best partial solution anyone's come up with.DeadVolume wrote:You can reset the 'beat no. 1' ... and you can adjust the volume of each sample independently of each other.
I do what you're trying to do all the time with my EMX and KP3, and as long as you realign the sample every few times it loops (as DeadVolume says above, using Shift + TapTempo) you'll be fine.

to get the loops perfectly aligning you can use a sequencer to send a note on/off message to the KP3 and whatever to the EMX (never used one) via midi. Ie. a 16 beat sample on the KP3 could be told to trigger on 1 on the first bar and off at the end of bar 4. Then on again on 1 of bar 5, off at the end of bar 8, etc. Each sample pad has a different note corresponding to it, so you can have them triggering independent of each other.
I think all this can only work with the new firmware using sample playback type 3. (But once you set the sample playback type to 3 for all four pads it will stay that way)

When I use both, I just never actually hit "stop" on the EMX...
(even if all the sounds are muted or solo'd to silence)
also use the "tempo lock" button to not confuse things with patern changes
then the loops never get out of line
(because in the KP3's mind, they just keep constantly spinning)
I just sample it live and then keep going on to a new pattern
Occasionally you will get some SLIGHT midi timing drift...
just record over the drifted loops with new ones!
These things are best used for straight forward live playing,
rather than pre-sequencing to MIDI laptops and such
For that, they are GREAT!
