New sounds for R3 uploaded! (21.01.2010)

Hi all,

Today I added 6 patches for the R3 on my page http://www.axxim.de/r3dias/
- A GrandPiano patch used in the YT-video. I recommend to give it a try with headphones.
- One SE patch (split bass & lead)
- Four new vocoders, two of them variations of the previous ones and two a bit different.

I also added some audio samples for some of the new patches, so no-R3 users at least can hear them.

To all new R3 users: to load these sounds, you have to open an existing library (.r3l), right click a patch (sound), select "Open" and then select the desired sound (r3p).

hey axxim, i am very thankful for that very nice patches ....because i am really new in sound programming and don´t have that much experience ....so i am glad , if anybody provides us with new patches ....

and that brings me to a question:

yesterday i saw the minikorg on youtube (not the microkorg, i mean the minikorg) , korgs first synthesizer ...heres the link :

now my question : is the R3 capable, to do exact the same sounds ??
and if so , can anybody do this ? i mean, providing us with that patches ...

i would be very very happy, if that would be possible ......and thankful too...because i am a fan of old vintage synthesizers......

In that video, did you see him turning those knobs? When you understand everything he is doing, then you will be ready to make those sounds.

The R3 is very capable. What it can produce will depend more on what you can do with it rather that what it is capable of doing.

You can own a room full of woodworking tools and still not be able to produce a chair that works, much less a finely crafted Black Forest Cookoo Clock. You don't start by learning how to build Cookoo Clocks. You start by learning with small and easy crafts, then gradually work your way up to more complex works as you learn the skills and tools one step at a time.

xmlguy: yeah your statement may be right.... to bad one could not see what kind of knobs , he is turning, or pushing ... thats the thing ....
on the other hand , i am not so experienced enough , to build such komplex sounds .....

Inexperience + effort + time = experience.

It can be a lot of fun to learn synthesis, so the effort can prove rewarding. It might be a complete mystery to you now, but in a few days you can start learning enough of the basics to make some of those sounds you heard for yourself.

You can even get started without spending a lot of money on hardware, as there are many free or cheap software synths that can get you learning the basics quickly. If you have an iPhone, iPodTouch2G or Nintendo DS/DSi, there's cheap applications you can buy to have a synth in your hands for learning wherever you go.

Congrats! Do you have it in your hands, or will it be shipped to you? You can download the R3 software editor right now to start learning. You don't need the hardware to run the editor. You won't be able to hear anything, but the screens and the manual can help you start to understand what the synth can do.

i have it here ...... also the editor , i had startet ......
but problem is.....:
i could only learn by listening ....things like lfo´s, osc´s and so on...thats too high for me.....(in the beginning ) ... even if somebody is writing .... the lfo does this or the osc does this ....... i only can do this practically.... well if i turn the knob and listen whats happening , ok , then i can say , thisone does this..... forming the sound ........
i know what phaser , flanger and all this things are , because i play guitar too and i got also an effectprozessor ( i mean that box, with the pedal).....but if somebody asking me , whats an lfo , i don´t know what to say

Firstly, I'll say it would be exceptionally difficult to start learning synthesis from dissecting presets if you know nothing to begin with. Too much is happening, they'll simply be too overwhelming to understand.

You need to start somewhere simple. Initialize a patch and start from there. After you've initialized a patch, print and read this:

It is the synthesis bible. Print it out, and refer to it regularly. Experiment using the initialized patch. You'll see which knobs do what. Get your hands dirty.

The best is, like Timo said, to start with an initialized Patch, play with the different parameters (Oscillator, trying different waveforms, Filter, Envelopes, LFO, etc.) one after one returning every time to the original to hear what doese each parameter does. Try to figure out what has changed in the sound, like what does it sound (an instrument, a burning cat...). Then go and try changing a few parameters and try to classify it again and so forth.... This way you will get an e(ar)xperience about it

So many users in this forum, like xmlguy had written so many answers to this questions, that if he had compiled them, it would be a good guide booklet for newcomers in the synth arena. So also take a look in the other posts in this forum.
