Can't decide...

Post by roadking02 »

I've been looking into getting a workstation keyboard for my home studio but I'm not really sure of what would be good. I've had my microKORG for over a year now and I personally love it! This past weekend I went to guitar center and fooled around with a Yamaha Motif XS8, Roland Fantom G8 and the KORG M3. I personally like the Fantoms interface seeing that I tend to make music on a computer more often and I'm used to a mouse. The motif seemed a bit to complex to navigate to me. The M3 I really liked but the keys are plastic. While it's cheaper on price I want something that feels natural. My question is mainly if the Roland Fantom G8 would be worth the money. I ordered a microphone bundle tonight from musicians friend and am looking at getting an interface. Possibly the Apogee Duet or the M-Audio Firewire 410.

aren't all keyboard keys plastic? or the control buttons?

I wouldn't let the M3's plastic buttons interfere here. those buttons are very solid, despite the feel, and the workstation's construction is very stable. The word on the Fantom G8 is that it's very buggy, and at least 1 in every 4 has been returned to the store. check out other posts in this forum, this topic has been discussed many times, you'll find lots of useful information there.

I've played all three, and bought an M3 two years ago.

I agree with you regarding the Motif XS--front panel navigation is more complex, and takes quite awhile to get used to (the Motif would benefit from a 10-key pad and a touch screen). After using an XS for awhile, I can tell you the M3 is much easier to navigate and program, plus the file system on the M3 is more user friendly. And of course... KARMA is a blast to work with.

As for the Fantom G, I was totally uninspired. I wanted to like it, since I've owned two Roland keyboards over the years, but even with it's massive screen and pretty pictures in the display, it's just too vanilla sounding.
