Korg EXB-SCSI Board Usage

Hello everyone,

I just caved in and bought the EXB-SCSI board for my newly acquired Korg Triton Classic. I didn't intend to get one but I couldn't stand the thought of requiring one in the future and then having to pay incredible prices to get one, not to mention finding one.

My question to those who have the SCSI board, is what do you think is the best way to implement the board to get effective usage out of it? Is there anything in particular you have found to be most useful?

Any tips and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

yup. easy one. Remove the floppy and mount a CF drive there. You can use up to 4GB drives and it FLIES when loading samples. You can still plug in a zip drive to the back of the keyboard.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realize you could run both the CF internal drive AND connect something in the back like a zip. That's pretty cool.

I checked this out and thought maybe I'd go for it with a price of $105, but then I saw the shipping cost to Japan plus it looks like I have to have a $50 installation kit for a cable....feeling a little nickle and dimed on that setup so I'll have to think about it. No denying it sounds great, but over $200 ouch! I think I'm really going to have to do some major sampling first before I jump on that. We'll see.

UDPATE: After searching for reviews on the SCSIforsampler CF Card reader, I found myself back on this forum with another post mentioning a 10% discount for users of this forum. Thus I am considering the option. The reviews have also been good. Thanks.

NP. As an FYI, I was one of the first that picked up that kit and I think paid more for it and I still consider it quite a bargain. Zip disks and CD rom drives are so freaking slow if you load samples. It's worth the price if you need to do any file transfers larger than a floppy. Then again, if you didn't, the SCSI is useless.

Hello Mc,

Well this morning I completely and utterly broke down, got on my knees, and cried "I can't take it anymore" and bought the SCSIforSampler internal drive package deal for my Triton Classic. I am having it shipped to Japan. The 10% discount really did it for me so I'm hoping that information is correct because I had to pay full amount in advance which seemed backwards.

Hopefully the installation is trouble free. I just finished a ton of soldering and wiring work on my Roland Juno 106 and would like to simply throw in the drive on he Classic and run....LOL.

I think what sold me on the CF drive is that I liked the possibility of storing 4GB worth of data ( Midi, PCG, Samples, etc ) and being able to access them without the computer or an external drive ). I feel my workflow on and off the stage would most likely be enhanced by that.

It will probably take me a few months to get over buyers remorse with the prices of all these accessories, but ultimately I'll be back to jamming and having fun!

And yes, SCSI for Samplers is a pretty top notch operation. I couldn't have been happier with the whole purchase/support. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

McHale, thank you so much for all the positive feedback you have given me on this board and for all your help in getting the Triton install kit together. The installation process has become quite easy to do, as I have perfected the metal brackets I use and the cabling has become better fitted but your help in working on the original incarnation was invaluable.

Since the installation process requires no soldering, cutting of wires or any permenant modifications to the Triton, I believe that most anyone can do it themselves. Plus we are here 7 days a week, available by email or phone to provide whatever technical support you may need.

We have kits for the Triton Classic, Rack, Pro and ProX. The Triton LE is the only model that cannot use the internal CF-CARD drive - it requires that you use the external model but otherwise, it works great.

I get this question a lot: "Do I need the SCSI interface in my Triton in order to use the CF-CARD drive" and the answer is yes, you do. The CF-CARD is a SCSI drive and as such, requires the SCSI interface be installed. Since the CF-CARD drive mounts in the place of the floppy, many people assume that it uses the floppy interface (a logical assumption) but no, this is not the case.

When you were putting together your pieces for the CF Card did you have any trouble getting the A and B brackets together according to the instructions? I was sent different parts than the manual and I am having trouble getting my parts to go together properly. I am going to have to create some custom modifications to make the DB25 connectors mesh together properly. You mentioned you had an earlier version, perhaps I have a newer one which unless I'm making a mistake has not been properly tested. I'm actually very disappointed in how these parts are not going together properly. It looks like the product will work, but the pieces are not accurate. I'll update with some photos of my own once I complete the project hopefully by tomorrow. Fingers crossed I can get this inside the Triton. What looked like a simple 30 minute project has turned into a rather stressful several day operation...grin. I'll find a way to get it in there.

He has no interest in helping or finding a solution, but only quickly to ask for the product back. I wonder why. He felt that I was completely wrong with everything I had said. I plan to see this through because I don't give up and will post full photographs and written documentation of my experience. The components sent do not fit properly in the Triton Classic. This is really upsetting. Perhaps others have had a great experience, but thus far I will never do business with SCSIforSamplers again.

Sorry to hear that. J.D. was nothing but cool to deal with when I installed mine. Do me a favor and try to work it out with him in private, There are threads on here and Harmony Central and everybody had good experiences with him so I'm sure it's just a misunderstanding. Knowing what he was like when I got mine, he wants to help you get your issue resolved but I'm sure is willing to take it back if you're not happy.

Personally, it's worth the effort to get it installed. It's a much needed upgrade at a good price. I will say for sure that if he sent you the parts that he sent me, it'll work.

I purchased this and installed myself and worked and looks great.Remember just follow the instructions I got ahead of myself before I received the instructions and got stuck even though it looked obvious to install.But it worked out after I viewed the instructions.

Basically, he is very happy with the drive and has nothing but praise for the drive and my company.
