Busted R3?

Post by nerf »

I just got a used R3 and there appears to be a few glitches. Firstly some of the 4 knobs on the right don't seem to have range. For eg the cutoff won't go all the way to 0, and when I'm naming things I can't get a capital "A", it only dials back to B.

I can't save the knob assignments per patch.

There are other odd things going on. Do I have a bum R3?

Hi ,
Have you tried using the R3 Sound Editor on you're PC/MAC ?
You might find some of those things are easier to change and save.

Editor is fine. Seems to be a knob issue. Is there a hard reset fn on the R3?

No go. I already did that. I need a complete reset of the device.

I had very similar issues to you - knobs not giving full range, also the mod wheel affecting pitch, and dodgy right side audio output - and I'm pretty sure all the problems stem from dodgy pots and bad grounding in the R3 design. I took mine apart, sprayed all the pots, including the 4 control knobs, pitch bend and mod wheels ( thru the little access holes on the pot casings) with a good contact cleaner and gave them all a good wiggle, then checked all the connections were good between the various pcbs, and it sorted all my problems out - I once had a couple of the knobs start losing range again, but repeated the procedure and all has been ok since (finger crossed).
This does seem to be quite a common problem for R3 users, and much as I love it, I think that both bad components and bad design have gone into some parts of the hardware, although Korg don't appear to have ever admitted any fault as far as I am aware.

Aha! Sounds about right. This was an eBay purchase, so I'm going to try to send it back. If it's a no go, I'll try the contact cleaner.

Any specific warnings?

Thanks

Eureka!

I pulled the R3 apart and went at it with a can of DeoxIt. Working perfectly now!

Many thanks!

So, just to confirm:does this procedure solve the problem of faulty/noisy outputs?
