Song of the Synth - what do you think?

Post by danielb »

Hi all,

Here's my latest song.

The Radias is quite prominent; it even provides the vocals . . .

Hope you like it.

at the beginning a few of the chord changes weren't what I would've expected, but otherwise, it's great! Love it!

Thanks!

The intro will most likely be removed, or at least changed, in the next version of the song.

Hi all,

Here is the hopefully final version of this song:

http://www.type34.info/temp/My%20Compos ... rday.6.mp3

This song has gone through probably dozens of versions, but I think I've finally got it right.

This is much simpler and shorter than the other versions - no more vocoder, very few effects, new drums and bass.

It also has a lot more Radias. the new bass and the rather gorgeous pseudo analogue monosynth sound in the second and third verses are Radias, as are the arpeggiated pad and the short vocoded parts that I left in.

I'd be very interested to know what you think.

original was much better, IMHO :-/
I preferred the original vocals, and the overall vibe... I didn't dislike the original intro, it's just that some of the changes were unexpected.

But definitely, I liked the original better :-/

the original is much more modern, which, while not always a good thing, works in this case.

The "final" version is by far the better version. That is, the version where your voice is not going through a vocoder the entire song. You have a great voice for your style music, don't hide it. The only thing is the body of the song is powerful and deep, but the refrain/chorus is weaker than the body because it gets too "bright" for the body. The body of the song has a foreboding tone where the refrain is sort of all over the place and bright. I just feel the refrain needs more power to it and not such high bright notes. Maybe different chords. I hope you are not insulted. I just think this tune has exceptional potential and the perfect mix of your vocals with your style makes a winning combo. You have great talent!

The final version is definitely the worse of the two. The first one is fun, something you can dance to. The second has that creepy Human League feel to it. Also, the drums on the original are much better. I enjoyed listening to the first. The second just creeped me out.

Now now, don't fight . . .

Tpantano - I'm really glad you like the first version. Listen to it, dance to it, whatever. I'm not erasing it from the world. I do think you're in a minority of one though.

Liqmat - By "final" I meant final from the point of view of sound and character. I didn't mean that I would never change anything. I also noticed that the chorus being a bit "in the air". I think the solution is either to put the bass down an octave or to add a sub bass. I am inclined towards the latter. I have a DSI Mopho on the way; it should be able to supply a suitable bass sound when it arrives. Thanks for the complement about my singing, BTW.

Thank you both for your opinions,

Daniel

I think its great you opened up your music for criticism. A very hard thing to do for most musicians. The key thing, as I am sure you know, is to go with your God given talent on what YOU feel is the true art you are trying to project to the general audience. I have done it in the past and that is let outside influences muddle my original intent with an artistic piece. Please keep us updated with your works as I love the direction you are going in and would love to purchase your work when it is ready. Cheers and happy producing!

oh btw LiqMat sorry for attacking you, I didn't mean it to be that way, I was a bit out of it with other things yesterday.

Maybe I am a minority; IDK. If the second one is what you were aiming for, then great! It is the artists choice how their music sounds after all.

I personally listen to bands like Data80 and Daft Punk a bit, and the first one had more of their vibe IMO, whereas I know a lot of people (especially the 80s-90s generation) would prefer the second, it's much more of a Human League, Duran Duran kinda thing.

You attacked me? Figures I would miss all the action. I just gave my opinion and advice. What everyone else does is their choice. No offense taken. I like open discussion.
