Talkbox EFX

Post by samoo451 »

Hey all. I`m in the middle of programming a 3 way split for the Bon Jovi song "Living On A Prayer."
I have set up the brassy synth 8th note sound on the left, the talkbox guitar part in the middle and a bell type fill part over on the right.

The question is, since I am playing those cool talkbox parts and letting our guitarist just crunch away on those metal chords, how can I assign a REAL sweeping talkbox or wah effect on those lead gtr sounds. I`m using 2 metal type guitar sounds and a sync synth sound for the basics of the patch. The joystick seems to be set up in down mode to filter at least part of the sound but I REALLY need to make it extreme.. Any ideas ??
Thx

try the "talking modulator" fx with letters modulation
or the vocoder fx...

Do you have a real talkbox, like the Banshee 2? If so, then send the middle split to a separate output on the TrEx to drive the talkbox. If not, then get a real talkbox. Vocoders and talking/formant modulators are not a replacement for a talkbox, particularly for a song like Living on a Prayer where the talkbox is so distinctive.

Yo R12, I owe u one big time. I programmed the talking modulator efx into the guitar patches (and routed it away from other sounds) and it KICKS ASS. It`s perfect for what I was searching for.

Now my final question is, how can I set up a way to turn off that effect for the verse parts of the song-if I feel like laying some big arena sized footballs with a big guitar sound-non modulated..I`m hoping to be able to set up either one of the faders or buttons to mute that effect but we`ll see...

I love the M3..Always a way to get any sound you need as long as you can find your way around programming a bit..

I hear what you`re saying about the talkbox being so specific of a sound..BUT, with the talking modulater effect set up to be controlled by the ribbon and the joystick for bending notes, it really is convincing and close to that sound. If you program the correct formant vowels (I used E U U top to bottom) and then adjust the resonance and formant level to the right amount it really does kick some ass...

Peace

It depends on how sophisticated the formant is. Just simple vowels done in a repetitive way is pretty easy to do with a talking modulator effect and some practice. Trying to reproduce whole words or phrases is much more difficult than with a talkbox where you simply use your mouth. Talkboxes aren't particularly expensive, and we used to have to construct them ourselves from scratch using amps and horn compression drivers. Being able to walk into a store to buy a Banshee 2 off the shelf is a pleasure that might not be appreciated unless you lived in a time before that was possible. All of the classic talkbox riffs were done on custom built gear by guitarists who were willing to go to unusual efforts in order to get a distinctive sound.

Talkbox

My final thought about the subject-With all the equipment I have to set up on a gig, where set up time is always an issue, bringing one less piece of gear helps my situation. If I can cop a sound that is close by programming it on a synth, I just saved myself valuable time and less space needed to stuff crap in a case..

Thanks guys for the help. I`ll get to play the song tonight..
