Sound-break on tritons

Post by KorgHammond »

Hello, list !
I'm using an Extreme and before that, I was a Triton classic user.
On both keyboards I've had a same problem, so there must be no hardware problems in those keyboards.
The problem is: When i play, sometimes it just stops playing. Like someone turned off the machine. Simply cuts the sound. Until I play the same or other chord again. It happens twice, or three times a night.
I'm sure you guys are familliar with this problem. What can I do ?
Thanks !!

Karlo.

I have never, ever heard of that problem. I have 2 Triton Classics that get gigged several times a week and have never had that problem.

Maybe there's a power issue at your house?
Current Korg Gear: KRONOS 88 (4GB), M50-73 (PS mod), RADIAS-73, Electribe MX, Triton Pro (MOSS, SCSI, CF, 64MB RAM), SQ-64, DVP-1, MEX-8000, MR-1, KAOSSilator, nanoKey, nanoKontrol, 3x nanoPad 2, 3x DS1H, 7x PS1, FC7 (yes Korg, NOT Yamaha).

I don't play it in a house.
The only thing that connects those two keyboards (my ex-triton pro and my extreme 76) are PCG's, KSC's and SNG's.
I'm pretty sure that problem is located, but what is the problem ?!

Do you have any external MIDI gear attached to your tritons?

I have had problems with KORGs and other manufacturer's devices in the past when working in conjunction with older controller keyboards or equipment, for example, which do not send 'active sensing' messages. What this means is that occasionally the synth or sound module will think that the MIDI cable has been disconnected and kill current notes in order to prevent a hanging notes situation.

I don't know for certain that the Triton Extreme implements this protocol, but it is one possibility.
Current Gear: Kronos 61, RADIAS-R, Volca Bass, ESX-1, microKorg, MS2000B, R3, Kaossilator Pro +, MiniKP, AX3000B, nanoKontrol, nanoPad MK II,
Other Mfgrs: Moog Sub37, Roland Boutique JX03, Novation MiniNova, Akai APC40, MOTU MIDI TimePiece 2, ART Pro VLA, Focusrite Saffire Pro 40.
Past Gear: Korg Karma, TR61, Poly800, EA-1, ER-1, ES-1, Kawai K1, Novation ReMote37SL, Boss GT-6B
Software: NI Komplete 10 Ultimate, Arturia V Collection, Ableton Live 9. Apple OSX El Capitan on 15" MacBook Pro

You made me thinking...
Yes, I have a controller keyboard connected to MIDI in.
And I just figured out that when I play KORG's sounds on my controller keyboard, have never met that problem, but I'm not 100% sure.

bad connection to mixer or if you are in a studio which connects to a computer using a soundcard it may be an asio/driver issue. (buffer settins an cause audio drop outs) :?:

I have this problem occasionally with my Extreme. I started a thread about it a year or two back about it. One or two people replied (IIRC) that they have the same problem with their Extremes.

I don't have anything MIDI connected to my Triton, so I don't think it's that. The sound will stop at random times (though it is rare) when playing a note or a chord. It works fine when the next note/chord is played.

It seems to be very similar to what happens when you press some of the front panel buttons (hardware buttons) while you're playing notes - the sound just stops.

Do you have only one midi cable connected between the keyboards? Only midi out of controller into midi in of triton?

Found the problem but not (yet) solution...

1-3 SYSTEM REALTIME MESSAGES OF TRITON EXTREME
+------------+------------------------------------------------------------+
|Status[Hex] | Description ( Transmitted when ... ) |
+------------+------------------------------------------------------------+
| F8 | Timing Clock ( Always in Prog/Combi/Seq/Song Play mode )*|
| FA | Start ( START in Seq/Song Play mode ) *|
| FB | Continue ( Continue START in Seq/Song Play mode ) *|
| FC | Stop ( STOP in Seq/Song Play mode ) *|
| FE | Active Sensing ( Always ) |
+------------+------------------------------------------------------------+

Active Sensing
A feature that enables a receiving MIDI device to implement an All Notes Off message should it ‘sense' an interrupted communication from a controller, thus preventing notes from ‘hanging' in the event of broken communication. A very useful feature for a MIDI device to implement.

So, what happens? Well, after each module waits for a suitably long time (ie, 300 milliseconds, which is a long time for MIDI devices, but a fraction of a second to humans) without receiving an Active Sense message, then the module automatically concludes that the MIDI connection is broken, and it automatically turns off any sounding notes, all by itself. Hence, the stuck note is turned off.

Now the question is...does the korg wavestation (my controller) support Active Sensing? If not...this cause the all note off event!!

I'm looking for info about this specific about wavestation and if there are OS update to fix it.

Bye
