I plan on entering but have been away. I haven't actually participated in any of the competitions yet, which I find slightly disappointing.

I also found some of the restrictions a bit confusing, having never programmed or properly used an R3. Not that I have a problem with working within them, but I'd be worried that I'd inadvertently missed something...

Haha axxim, well if the deadline is extended, and this competition stays "friendly," then I would consider having a go at making something to submit.

But like X-trade, I've never used an R3 either. Pure Radias blood flows in these veins. That doesn't mean the restrictions would be a problem though.

Well, I have had the R3 but sincerely, after dealing with the Radias I thought much of its features were also found in the R3. With the last target I first really realized how much the differences between the R3 and Radias are. Things that I supposed to be featured in the R3 turned to be unavailable when I loaded the R3 editor. I tried to keep the Radias patches compatible with the R3 as far as possible but I will never be sure if my Patch will really be R3 compatible.

I think you should make your patches anyway, trying to maintain the most relevant R3 limitations. For myself, if two submissions are my favourites and one is made with the R3 while the other is made with the Radias, my vote will go to the R3's one. I was thinking of setting this in the rules in case of a "douce" between two patches made with different synths.

The main purpose of this challenge was, besides to win it, to enforce the members to participate on the challenge and to expand their abilities. Most submissions will have someone who likes it and vote for it and this is the real incentive, having someone who likes your patch or you liking the patch of someone else!
So don't hesitate to submit your patches! Most of you are musicians that have gigs and presentations and should have less inhibitions than me, who only had 2 public presentations (sequencer based) about 20 years ago!

I think it would be OK to extend it. How about the 26th September? Charles, what do you think?

An extension would be great. I'd really like to enter this one, but I've been so distracted with other stuff it has been hard to get into the mindset.

Why don't we make the challenge once a month, with the last day of the each month being the last day of submission? Then a weeks judging, followed by a new challenge.

Whose "okay" do we need in order to approve the extension for this challenge?

Thats is true! I just wanted to give Charles Ferraro the chance to post his opinion as he is the task setter.

Well, we can change it to a monthly patch. I just didn't wanted to get confusions with OSAM and thought it would be shorter to create a patch than a song!

If the majority seconds this modality, then the next RPC will be called RPC-October-2010 and so forth. I hope this will increase the number of submissions

RPC#004 will last until 30th of september and I expect to see at least 3 more patches for this month!

The voting should be considered too. So we have to set 3 monthly deadlines: End of submissions (last day of month), end of voting (5th or 7th?), setting of the new task(7th or 10th?).

Your comments please?

I think until the 7th for voting gives a good week for anyone that has trouble finding the time to sit down and really listen to the patches. And then I'm indifferent to either the 7th or 10th to the end of the month for the challenge.

Thanks McHale I appreciate it.

I'm thinking of doing something different for the next patch challenge. Instead of issuing an open task and giving an example of what to make, I'll demo a basic patch and have participants try to reverse engineer it.
And by basic, I mean really basic. Like no effects, sequencers, LFO's or virtual patching. Something like a simple cutoff modulated bass timbre or saw pad. Perhaps some amp drive or waveshaping to throw a monkey wrench into the equation.
This idea for an RPC wont be about creativity so much as technical skill. The person who makes a patch closest to the demoed sound wins the round.

Could be more challenging than you guys think.

Chime in and give your feedback on this idea for RPC#005.
