KP3 as MIDI controller

Im having a bit of trouble get my new kp3 to act as a MIDI controller for Live 8. I press shift + 8 then it seems to take me to a program number select menu. The manual just says to press 'write' but write is not flashing as an option. It must be so simple! what am I doing wrong? thanks

anyone have any ideas?, even tried re installing drivers

do you have "remote" as "on" in midi preferences in live?
