User musical interests?

Post by TuhwistedFiahstatah »

I've been digging around the forums, picking up plenty of knowledge along the way, but one thing has left me really curious. I read post after post discussing tech and technique, but I've rarely come across any users discussing their musical tastes.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to turn this into a musical criticism forum. I just think it would be interesting to see what you guys are listening to and how that factors into your advice. For instance, a person who loves dubstep and plays it well may have wildly different methods of programming than someone who plays mostly synthpop.

Well, without further ado, I'll share my interests!

I'm a major big beat fan (Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, that kind of thing) and I love anything retro (Gary Numan, early Tears for Fears). I've only recently started getting into the 'World of Synth', but when I'm playing, it's usually with some fat-dirty-bassy sound or a spacey trance-like sound.

If I had to name a favorite album, it would be The Prodigy's debut, Experience.

I also have a thing for indie bands, primarily Bloc Party, but oddly enough, I like their earlier edgy-guitar style more than their newer electronic stuff.

So, now that I've spilled my beans, how about you spill yours?

EDIT:  I probably should've put this thread into general music, but I feel like I'll be in the RADIAS/R3 forum more than anywhere else. Thus, I'd rather get to know the taste of users I'll actually be communicating with.

daft punk is and probably always will be the best musical duo of all time. discovery is probably the best album. anything they touch turns to gold, and even side projects like stardust release good hits. plenty of other bands stem from their influence; ex justice, phoenix.

I like similar artists like deadmau5 as well.

I enjoy dubstep and dnb, usually liquid.

dance, rave, house, I enjoy all of the party kinds of electro. hardcore is decent as well, including nightcore remixes.

love trance, though I don't get too familiar with artists, I just let trance fm run. infected mushroom is probably one of my favorite trance-like groups.

I like lighter music too; I enjoy synthpop like adam young (owl city)'s various projects. I enjoy the postal service along with their alternative counter part, death cab for cutie.

speaking of alternative, I used to be really into alternative rock before I got into synths. red hot chili peppers is one of my favorite bands.

alt. style bands that combine synths are some of my favorites- yeah yeah yeahs and metric, among others.

synth-emo music. I tend to enjoy emo bands that use a bit of synth like analog rebellion (previously playradioplay!), I enjoy crunk/emoish people like thesecrethandshake as well. I used to have a bad habit of listening to bands like brokencyde, but I eventually realized it was pretty shite music.

emotional electronic music, I'm not sure what genre I can actually call this, but I like people like frou frou/imogen heap.

moving away from synths, I enjoy piano vocal jazz like regina spektor.

I enjoy overproduced mainstream dancepop like lady gaga and ke$ha, I'm sorry.

hip-hop/rap-pop- I enjoy rihanna kind of stuff sometimes. my bad again, too mainstream, I know.

as for rap, eminem has some decent songs, I prefer his older stuff. I've heard other raps I enjoy as well.

psychedelic alternative... MGMT and Passion Pit are pretty amazing.

I can listen to and enjoy pretty much music from any genre, though I will admit I'm not a huge country fan. Too rednecky for me. Otherwise, I prefer to judge songs on an individual basis.

I like some electronic pop/rock like Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, La Roux, MGMT, most of all Radiohead from the OK computer till now.

Something danceable: I like too Justice(what a basses!) or Ricoloop.

Darker: Portishead, Porcupine Tree.

More experimental: Felix Kubin, Mathew Herbert, Arto Lindsay or Juana Molina.

I don't like the trance, I really dislike bad techno(always in my opinion...)

In the other hand: Richard Bona, Zap Mamma, Michel Camilo, Frank Zappa, Screaming headless torsos, Emir Kusturica, Eric Satie, Salif Keita, Caetano Veloso, Camarón de la Isla, Enrique Morente, Talking heads, Jamiroquai, Mano Negra, Ska Cubano, Ernest Ranglin, Billy Cobham, Hermeto Pascoal, Zawinul, Cachaito, Blur, Primital, Mahavishnu orchestra...
Try one of them. If you like music, you like any name...

Cheers

I'm a grizzled old fart and while I like electronic music, I'm not interested in dance or synth-pop music at all. I prefer Berlin school, ambient, early industrial and 60s avant-garde/academic stuff.

I came into electronic music largely through listening to Zappa and prog rock in the late 60s. In the 70s I fell in love with Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk. My favorite contemporary artists would be Brian Eno and Bill Laswell. I still enjoy the mix of electronic and "normal" instruments the best and that's what I work on at home.

I perform live regularly on bass guitar and string bass. I don't play rock music any more (too old) but rather various folk and ethnic musics as well as jazz and vintage R&B; unfortunately no call for playing synths at all

^ I must be even more grizzled then!

My top musical love is classical (sorry!) - Bach to Britten and everything inbetween, but particularly adore Ravel, Faure, Greig and Mahler.

Next comes Vangelis - he is THE crossover artist from classical to modern instruments/style (IMHO). It's a personal goal to have all of his albums one day - currently sitting at 48 CDs on my shelf...

Then there's Mike Oldfield, taking themes and mixing acoustic with electronics in a different way to Vangelis.

Then there's my 'stuff' (am I allowed to say I like my own stuff?) - I compose/arrange and my wife (professional cellist hence my moniker) sprinkles the 'magic acoustic dust' on top :D Our goal is to put together an album of interesting classical themes and bring it right up to date using different approach and instruments.

Generally I like all music - although am not into cocophony that hurts my delicate ears, but enjoy a good blast at a concert or gig, or nightclub! Have even been known to like Cheryl Cole - can't decide if that's just her, or her music though

Ultimately, I love creativity - wherever it comes from.

metal! metal meal and more metal! I use my radias to make cool analog stuff along the lines of Dark tranquillity and such. Keyboards in metal is something that has been very low key but why its such an amazing part of metal!

Check out bands like Sonata Arctica, nightwish, Stratovarius, Kalmah
all great heavy bands with keyboards!

Great idea for a thread. Prodigy are one reasons I got into electronic music. For those that don't know, imagine hearing this in 2002:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBYVD1T9gFQ

I used to batter a tape of the experience and nothing else when younger - even when I had a migraine once lol!

Fatboy Slim, I was lucky enough to go to University in Brighton which is where the whole big beat thing exploded and before Norman was as big. Mid-late nineties rave culture with a bloody big grin!! Great times.

My whole group of friends are 80s fans and this has really affected me over the last 15 years as I basically missed it in the 80s. I mix drum and bass but recently got into mixing 80s too (but did you know Cars was '79 originally?!). Anyway I love mixing (properly beat matching and key mixing) sets like from then. Yesterday I mixed New Order, Cars(!), Johnny Won't You Come Back Home, Enjoy The Silence.. it really woks a treat!

Who's up for making a synth patch like the one at the beginning of tainted love:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBWrLhgiX74

It's so good.... really good training on how to make a haunting and chilling patch... it's got such a biting edge.

DnB is pretty much my life. Have been trying to get a baseline to modulate crazily out of the Radias lately (please help in the other thread!).

But yeah, I DJ DnB mainly and produce it too. Not that I don't want to write other types of track but I want a vinyl release on DnB first, make my mark on the world ;]
