R2D2 Sound

Post by rben675 »

I've had my radias since about October and loving it. The only problem is I've upgraded from a Nord Lead Rack 2 (getting old and starting to malfunction) and it had an amazing R2D2 like sound that myself and others just haven't been able to recreate. Can anybody lend a hand?

This is very simple;

Turn portamento way up, probably about halfway (64)
Set osc 1 to a square wave.
Turn LFO2 to the following settings: S&H, Timbre Sync, no BPM Sync, 0.01 freq.
Use Patch 1 to set LFO2 to Pitch, Adjust P Int. to taste (lower seems to work better for R2D2)

And voila! To play it, just repeatedly hit one note. Every time you want him to 'whistle' just hit a different note.
(note: you'll either need to play higher on your keyboard or transpose it up an octave or 2 to get the proper R2D2 pitch)

There's some way to automate it, I'm just too tired atm to remember how.

Try getting a different 'vocal' characteristic by changing the Pulse Width on OSC 1.

A little of topic, but what exactly is 'Timbre Sync'. I've been trying different settings, but I haven't been able to figure it out yet.

If an LFO is synced to the timbre, then it will start from the start (or zero degrees phase) for each group of notes you play, so it will remain effectively monophonic (assuming you're not doing anything else to it, e.g. modulating rate with keyboard track or velocity).

If sync is off entirely, the LFO again remains effectively monophonic (including previous assumptions) but is free running, carrying on between phrases.

If sync is set to Note, it becomes polyphonic, triggering the LFO back to its starting position (phase) for each note you hit.

So for example if you have a slow sweeping motion it will go up and down even when you're not playing (with sync Off).
With sync set to Timbre then it will go back to the start (middle) each time you take your hands off completely and start playing again.
With sync set to Note, each note you play will have its own sweep independent of other notes you're playing.

How this behaves with S&H though, I'm not sure. I think if you're using sync then it will start at the start of a step when you hit a note, so you're not ending up somewhere between steps and getting a shorter step the first time round.

Thank you for the quick reply.

That really cleared things up in a way that a manual never can.

Will try it out next time i'm playing the Radias.

R2D2 patch on R3

Post by TecRoc »

Hi there,

I have tried this on my R3 and came up with a nice patch i think.
I added some improvements like Velocity sensitive pitch and cross
Mod to give the little bot more possibilities for articulation.
For radias users: you can get the R3 editor and load the patch into the
editor to check the settings and transfer them to the radias manually.

You can get it here along with my other creations:

Have Fun tweaking and talking with the R2D2...

Hey thanks everybody, I'm going to try this later and if tweaks, etc. I'll post here. Been meaning to upload some of my patches anyway, so will do so to show my appreciation.

I think this will work out much better than what I have been which is alpha base preset patch down an octave and ring modulated by hand on my KP2, giving it a more loosely created feel. Close but just not the same.
