... could it be that R3 users are more creative in sound programming than Radias ones?

Being for more than a year mainly in this forum section I have the impression that the majority of the members that create and post their patches here are R3 owners.

Even when I had the R3, I was more creative and more involved in sound programming than now, having the Radias.

Could it be that having more than twice the power of the R3 we think we can do it all and therfore we don't need to do it?
Could it be that more power makes us more lethargic?
What do you think?

I had the R3 and it was more difficult for me to create a sound, but most of the time I did it with the computer editor.
Now with the Radias, I am faster designing sounds. I prefer the knobs than the mouse.

On the other hand, I think the more you have limitations the more creative you are.

The Radias has so many great sounds out of the box... it's easy to be lazy.

When I have more time this Spring, I'll start programming more original patches though.

For me, necessity is the mother of invention. When I bought my R3 for $420, the Radias was over $1,200. I could buy a lot of other stuff for the difference, and I did, including an X-Station, Z1, and X50.

Now that the Radias Rack has dropped in price, its very tempting to upgrade, but then I think of the following:

I prefer to program efficiently to not waste polyphony
Therefore I don't run out of polyphony
2 timbres is good enough for me
I have no interest in the Radias Drums.
I don't have much need for the envelope follower.

So for now I'm staying pat with the R3. I don't know if I'll be able to continue to resist if I find a Radias-R under $500.

I've programmed hundreds of patches on my Radias. I've had to wipe the banks and start again a number of times simply for running out of space.

Of course, a handful of these I'd like to share. And a smaller percentage of these I actually have an immediate use for music.

I wish I could use all of them but I find once a patch is programmed and is saved to the computer it just gets forgotten about - it is only the ones currently in my Radias which get used.

Anyway, I am certainly very 'patchually active' with my RADIAS-R. I think the point really is that RADIAS users aren't so conductive to sharing their patches.

I've had two patch libraries waiting to be published which just need finishing touches, but I've not had the time in the past year between university studies, graduating, looking for jobs, working...

R3 vs Radias

Post by TecRoc »

More Creative, because of less possibilities?

I really would like to have a radias too, but i would still keep my R3
because of its ideal measurements for live. The "limitations" of the
R3 compared to the Radias, makes it somewhat necessary to think
in unconventional ways when programming. For example i use the
mod seq as an alternate Env which i can shape more flexible.
The Radias here has its envelopes with log/lin curves. But this only
means the Radias has much more possibilities which i would use, if i had it.
One really annoying thing on the R3 is that there are less V-patch mod destinations.
Especially the destination V-Patch amount and the OSC Ctrl2 are quite valueable.
I also like to have the onboard knob tweaking capabilities of the Radias.
Particularly the Step Sequencer knobs. Unfortunately in germany the Radias still
sells for the regular retail price.
And that could be another reason why it seems there are less Radias Patches.
there might be more R3 users than Radias users.
Or maybe the Radias users are making more music and doing less programming.

Well but all in all i´d say it´s about the creative mind that´s behind the wheel,
that makes a good patch. Nevertheless some experimentation combined with solid synth knowledge is necessary.

BTW: I have never programmed as much patches (over 1000) on any other synth
but on my R3, thanks to the excellent editor.

I have the R3 but not the Radias. I am thinking about getting the Radias or JP-8000 as my next synth but not sure on which one. Anyways I love the R3 and LOVE making pads with it.
