MIDI HELP!!??

I have a Korg I5s. I only ever use it for playing but lately I've been trying to use the MIDI.

I bought a MIDI to USB cable but I can't seem to get a signal through?

Do you have to turn the keyboard on to allow it to work? or should it just work :?
