RADIAS Program Change using the Spectralis

Post by acemonvw »

So I have this issue and I'm not sure where the problem is. I've posted this issue on the Spectralis' forums, but it was recommended that I post it here. If you haven't used the Spectralis, it's quite a complex beast and easy to get lost in. Anyway, I'm trying to put this in a logical order so here goes:

Here's the setup:
Korg 01/wfd keyboard MIDI OUT to Spectralis MIDI IN
Spectralis MIDI OUT to Korg RADIAS MIDI IN

Here's the Issue:
My issue is this, using the Spectralis, I cannot access Banks A - H on the spectralis. I can access Banks I - P. Basically, what happens is the spectralis gives you this when you map out the MIDI definition:

1/16:S07:<Song> MIDI Defn. Chn 1
Bank: 1 Sound: 25 Vol: 100 Pan: <C>

Changing Bank does not do anything (note: I'm using the Spectralis to change the Radias' programs)!
Changing Sound will scroll through the various patches from the I - P Bank.

So if I go to Sound: 1 (on the spectralis), the Radias is on patch: I01 (Which you would pronounce as "Eye, zero one.")
If I go to Sound: 104, the Radias is on patch: O08 (Which you would pronounce as "Oh, zero eight.")
If I go to Sound: 128, the Radias is on patch: P16 (Which you would pronounce as "Pee, sixteen.")

I thought, maybe if I change the bank on the spectralis to Bank: --- (which leaves the bank as ambiguous), then I could access the patches on Radias that run from Bank A through H, but it doesn't work either!!! I have no idea how to have the Spectralis access these patches. I could move my patches to I - P, but I just don't think I should have to.

The Radias' manual says stuff I can't really understand about Program Change/Bank select:

"RADIAS programs A01 - H16 and I01-P16 correspond to program changes [Cn, 00]-[Cn, 7F]"

It also gives me this chart, which seems like it should be telling me what I want to know, but I can't decipher what the hell it means. So maybe you folks with more knowledge on MIDI can help me make sense of this:

Bank (CC#0)______Bank(CC#32)______ProgChange______Bank&Prog
____MSB_____________LSB_____________Value_________Number
_____0_______________0______________0-127_________A01-H16
_____0_______________1______________0-127__________I01-P16

It's as though I need to be sending Bank(CC#32) LSB as zero if I want to access programs A - H, but I don't know how to do that with the Spectralis. Does anyone know how to solve this issue? Is this a Radias issue or a Spectralis?

I'm a bit worried that the Spectralis community will believe it lies with the Radias, and the Radias community will believe the fault lies with the Spectralis because not a lot of people have both synths

Anyway, I appreciate your help!

Here's the original forum topic that I posted on the Spectralis site. It should be identical information, but if you want to see it there, here's the link:

What happens when you radias out/spetralis in?

Well, the Spectralis has banks, but I they're a lot more confusing and are separate for each synth part (There are three ROMpler based synths and an analog synth in the Spectralis), so if you're wondering what if I switch the cables to see if the RADIAS can do to the spectralis what I want the spectralis to do to the RADIAS, then I'm not sure it will work, I can always try it though.

If you mean what if I switch the cables to be Radias OUT and Spectralis IN and still try to have the spectralis send program change messages, that won't work. It's able to send messages, just not accessible to programs A - H.

It looks like in the documentation, the radias bank changes are relative to MSB and LSB signals, where programs A - H go by MSB 0 and LSB 0, while programs I - P go by MSB 0 and LSB 1. I don't know enough about MIDI to understand how that would work in the Spectralis because it doesn't have a menu in the MIDI section regarding MSB and LSB. Again, I don't really understand all this stuff, so perhaps I mis-interpreted your question or something else...

Thanks!

Yeah, I was curious of how the spectralis handled the program change messages sent from the radias. I have done a lot of midi work with the radias and have a fair to good understanding of it. Recording the spectralis midi output would be useful, also a midi implementation sheet for it would be nice.

From what you said about the spectralis it sounds a lot like the way the radias handles individual timbre changes.
