Please help a dumb guitarist! PLEASE!!!

Post by eightball »

HI, I have an X5D. Can somebody please help me get the distorted, Hammond organ sound Wolfmother use on Joker and the thief? I can find my way around all manner of guitar effects processors without a problem. This bloody synth is driving me nuts! Please help me!

this sound?

Treat your keyboard output like a guitar sound, as he apparently does. Distortion, octave doubler, short delay (thickener), long delay or verb... all possible.

At ~ 3:17 you get a fair shot at the effects he's using that are mounted on top of his keyboard (which is not an x5d). At a guess, the silver and black one looks like something (possibly vintage) from electro-harmonics -- I'm only a dabbler in guitar effects, maybe you'll recognize the other ones.

Been a long time, but I don't think you'll find any internal FX of a high enough quality to do this using JUST the x5d, so you might want to plug it into a stomp-box or three to see if that improves your results.

Thanks for your help Bill. Thats got me excited!, I've got a Boss VF-1 multi effects processor kicking around here somewhere that might do the trick, any idea what basic keyboard sound on the X5 I should start with?

I would guess, based on what I can see of the drawbar settings that the actual sound before processing is fairly thin - mid rangy (IAW getting the best out of guitar FX since guitar is also) - not an "all drawbars maxed" type sound. [PM me if you want to know a bit more about drawbars.]

Also, no big bottom (that first drawbar is not more than 1/3 out) so I would think a medium "gospel" rather than "jazz" or "farfisa" type.

In the 50's-60's Hammond Organ jazz guys (and later gospel & rock players) were notorious for zeroing their drawbar settings on breaks and after so no one could copy their signature sound. Might be the case here, too. Add to that the type and settings of FX and it is indeed a sonic puzzle.

Good luck,

Update: Looked for similar faceplates at EH website - black & silver box may be vintage memory man (U2 fave) analog delay.

Plain gray box may be Klon Centaur OD.

Sorry for the qualifiers on the guesses - not enough rez in the video to make a better guess.

The 1st vid was from '07 Japanese live TV. No vintage on the still pic, may be more recent.
